Splatoon: some details about Hero Mode, videos and commercials

Yesterday evening, Nintendo World Report published a preview for Splatoon, focusing on Hero Mode (the Single Player adventure).As mentionned during previous Nintendo Directs and reports, this mode tasks you with saving the Zapfish (who produce the electricity of all Inkopolis and beyond) from the Octarians.

The first levels of the game are actually pretty straightforward, and require you switch from human to squid form in order to overcome some (rather basic) obstacles. The levels are made up of several “floating” islands, and you go from one to the other via launch pads. To fight the Octarian troops, you have to outsmart them (by hiding in your ink, for example).

Splatoon 9.4.2015Apparently, each level is based on specific mechanics. For example, “Floating Sponge Garden” is all about sponges, that you fill up with ink in order to use them to reach new areas. There’s also the Propeller: you need to shoot ink at it in order to make platforms move, which can be used, in certain conditions, to attack your enemies from below.

Here’s two more example of gameplay mechanics in levels:

– Inkraill Skyscape: in this level, you use rails to progress through the level. At one point, you need to perform timed jumps in order to reach some platforms;
– Inkvisible Avenues: you need to splash ink everything in order to see where you’re going.

One important thinkg to keep in mind: your Inkling can only get splatted three times in Hero Mode; after that, you’re sent back to the overworld (located below Inkopolis), why is why checkpoints are quite crucial (especially if you don’t want to start every level from the start). They’re especially important in some levels, where enemies are throwing down ink tornados at you.

In a level called “Flooder Junkyard”, gigantic robot spray their ink everywhere: if they spot you, you better hurry and find somewhere to hide, or you’ll be in trouble.

Obviously, there will be various bosses in Hero Mode. Here’s two examples:

– Octostomp (already seen several times in trailers/Nintendo Directs): you need to climb on it by painting its sides, in order to attack its tentacles on top;
– Octowhirl: it flies straight at you. To beat it, you need to trap it in ink, and then attack its tentacles.

To go with the preview, Nintendo World Report also posted some gameplay videos: you can find them after the break!

And finally, some new pictures from the Squid Research Lab. they’re about the 8-bit mini-games. One of them is available right from the start, but for the other, you need to unlock them using one of the Splatoon amiibo:

– Squid Ball: Inkling Girl;
– Squid Race: Inkling Boy;
– Squid Radio: Squid.
