[Japan] The Super Mario Bros. Movie: sales data for the home video release [Update: Week 37]

In the weeks and months following the release of the Super Mario Bros. Movie in Japan, TOHO (the Japanese distributor) shared regular updates about its box office performance.

Starting today (September 6th), the Super Mario Bros. Movie is available on Blu-Ray (and DVD), and thanks to Oricon, we have some sales data (daily and weekly) for that home video release.

This post will be updated on a regular basis with all relevant data, so keep checking back!

Total sales

As of May 12th, the various versions of the Super Mario Bros. Movie have sold:

  • DVD: 4,551 units sold (as of May 19th)
  • Blu-Ray: 496 units sold (as of May 12th)
  • Blu-Ray + DVD combo: 76,012 units sold (as of April 14th 2024)
  • SteelBook Blu-Ray + DVD combo: 4,757 units sold (as of September 2023)
  • 4k Ultra HD + Blu-Ray combo: 2,784 units sold (as of September 2023)
  • SteelBook 4k Ultra HD + Blu-Ray combo (Limited Edition): 1,039 units sold (as of September 2023)
  • SteelBook 4k Ultra HD + Blu-Ray combo: 790 units sold (as of September 2023)
  • Total: 90,234 units sold (as of May 19th, but missing some data)

May 22nd

According to Oricon, the stand-alone DVD of the Super Mario Bros. Movie sold 812 units during its 4th week, which brings total sales to 4,551 units. It ranked #7 in the DVD ranking, and #2 in the Anime DVD ranking. Total sales for all versions combined now stand at 90,235 units.

According to Oricon, the stand-alone DVD of the Super Mario Bros. Movie sold 1,139 units during its third week, which brings total sales to 3,739 units. It ranked #7 in the DVD ranking, and #2 in the Anime DVD ranking.

Meanwhile, the stand-alone Blu-Ray sold 126 units during its third week, which brings total sales to 496 units. It ranked #17 in the Anime Blu-ray ranking.

According to Oricon, the stand-alone DVD of the Super Mario Bros. Movie sold 1,396 units during its second week, which brings total sales to 2,600. It ranked #7 in the DVD ranking, and #2 in the Anime DVD ranking.

Meanwhile, the stand-alone Blu-Ray sold 195 units during its launch week, and 175 units during its second week (total: 370 units sold). It ranked #12 in the Anime Blu-ray ranking during its second week.

According to Oricon, the DVD of the Super Mario Bros. Movie (which was released on April 24th) ranked #9 in the DVD rankings during its launch week (April 22nd to April 28th) with 1,204 units sold. It ranked #2 in the Anime DVD rankings. This brings total sales for all versions combined to 86,586 units (missing Blu-Ray data for Week 33 and 34).
