Monster Hunter Stories: additional details from Famitsu

This week, Monster Hunter Stories was showcased in Famitsu magazine, who brought us the first details about it since the Tokyo Games Show 2015, in September. In this post, you will find additional details we didn’t cover in this post!

Monster Hunter StoriesFirst, we have details about two characters, who are the protagonist’s childhood friends:

  • Lilia: a bright and active young girl, who often drags the protagonist around, and is always the first to move into action.
  • Cheval: a serious, but kind-hearted boy. Just like the protagonist, he aims to become a Rider.

One day, they all go into the forest, pretending to be hunting for eggs. To their surprise, a wyvern comes out of the egg they bring back from their expedition, and that very meeting with the creature completely changes their fate.

Hakuma Village is the name of the place where the Riders live, and it’s completely cut from the outside world (it’s surrounded by greenery and running water). The people who live there are self-sufficient, and live in harmony with monsters (unlike Hunters, who… well, hunt them). As you can imagine, for someone who has always lived there, meeting people in the outside world will have a huge impact on the protagonist’s life.

Hunters live in a big city by the coast, with a shopping area (with Weapon shops, Item shops, etc.), a Hunter Guild, a Quest board, and more. Going there will be a major event for the protagonist: after all, Riders live in harmony with monsters, while Hunters hunt them… can they truly see eye to eye with each other?

Along with humans, Felynes also live in the Hunters city, and they have their own jobs. Famitsu introduces several Felynes:

  • one of them can take you around to various locations
  • a postman Felyne
  • a mysterious Felyne with a green hat
  • a Felyne carrying an egg

Next, more characters are introduced:

  • Ayuria: a sleeping girl protected by a Barioth, and with a mysterious shining blue stone on her chest;
  • Rivelt: a Hunter, who takes an interest in the protagonist.

Finally, we have some details about the battle system. In order to use Kizuna Moves/Attacks, you need to fill up a gauge. When it’s filled, you can ride your Otomon, and use those really powerful moves.

Here’s two examples:

  • Sky High Fall (Rathian): you fly high into the air, then the Rathian comes crashing down while blowing fire at the enemy. Covers a wide area;
  • Blose Cyclone (Diablos): Diablos goes underground, and attack from beneath your enemy, sending it flying.

Monster Hunter Stories (3DS) comes out this year in Japan.
