Shin Megami Tensei IV Final will only have one route; more details

Shin Megami Tensei IV FinalYesterday, Shin Megami Tensei IV Final was showcased during a livestream on NicoNico. Atlus revealed the very first trailer for the game, and even made a live demonstration with a battle against Medusa: click here to check it out! The developers also revealed some additional details about the game, including a major element: the number of routes.

And it turns out that Shin Megami Tensei IV Final only has one “neutral” route, unlike the original. However, that doesn’t mean there is but one ending: the developers confirmed there would be several of them. They also reiterated that players do not need to play Shin Megami Tensei IV first in order to enjoy this game, even though they did put several references in there for those who did.

Just like the main character in Shin Megami Tensei IV, the protagonist of Shin Megami Tensei IV Final (who is silent) uses a gauntlet to control demons. However, there’s one major difference: the gauntlet is actually his smartphone.

Next, they gave details about two characters:

  • Asahi, the protagonist’s childhood friend, is 15 (quite younger than the usual Shin Megami Tensei female characters);
  • Navarre will play a bigger role in this game.

The developers then explained a bit more how the Partner system works. First of all, Asahi is (quite obviously) not the only human Partner in the game. Second: your Partner shows up when you’re in a pinch, thanks to the Assist Attack system. They also confirmed that your Partners will be able to get XP and level up.

Several changes have been made gameplay-wise, starting with the demon negociations, which have been completely revamped. As for demons, they will now be able to use magic of any type, even if they don’t specialise in it (though obviously, it will be more effective if they do have an affinity for a given type). Also, their stats have been completely changed, so that even players who completed Shin Megami Tensei IV will be surprised.

Finally, the Producer reveals that Isabeau will be in Shin Megami Tensei IV Final, and teased fans regarding Flynn (the protagonist of Shin Megami Tensei IV). Quite obviously, the “Final” in the title applies to Shin Megami Tensei IV, and not the series as a whole.

Shin Megami Tensei IV (3DS) comes out on February 10th in Japan.
