Nintendo 3DS: over 15 million units sold in the US, 8th Nintendo system to reach that threshold

The Nintendo 3DS was launched on March 27th, 2011 in the United States, and since then, it’s been quite the ride for Nintendo and for fans. After a rather good launch, sales started to drop significantly, and Nintendo was forced to cut the price of its handheld barely a few months later. Since then, the handheld has been selling pretty well, even though the journey hasn’t always been really smooth.

Fastforward to June 2015, and the Nintendo 3DS still remains a popular handheld, but in a much different market than before (which is now dominated by mobile devices). And today, Nintendo announced that the Nintendo 3DS has sold a total of 15 million units in the United States alone since launch (internal figures).

The Nintendo 3DS has been on the market for over 50 months now, but it doesn’t look ready for retirement just yet. During the first six months of 2015, sales of the Nintendo 3DS have increased by 50% over the same period in 2014, which is quite obviously due to the launch of the New Nintendo 3DS XL, back in February.

Here’s what Scott Moffit, Nintendo of America’s Executive Vice President of Sales & Marketing, had to say about this:

“While crossing 15 million units is certainly a significant milestone, we are equally excited about the new momentum we’ve created in 2015 thanks to new hardware and an unrivaled library of software. With more great games on the way and a hardware system for every type of gamer, 2015 is shaping up to be one of the stronger years yet for Nintendo 3DS in the United States.”

The Nintendo 3DS has just become the 8th Nintendo system to sell over 15 million units since launch in the United States, and there’s no doubt it will just keep on selling until the next handheld comes out. But will it manage to reach 20 million units sold in the United States alone?

Since the launch of the NES, Nintendo has sold:

– 270 million consoles, which includes:
– 145 million handhelds
– 125 million home consoles
