Media Create: more sales data for Shin Megami Tensei IV Final and Week 6 (2016)

Today, Media Create released its weekly report for video game sales in Japan, providing us with more sales data for Week 6, 2016, but also Shin Megami Tensei IV Final. During Week 6, a total of 447 000 games were sold, which is 97.16% of Week 5 sales. Thanks to popular new entries, the sales of new games increased: 178.07% of last week sales.

That being said, those new games were not able to compensate for the drop in sales of previously-released games, as their Week 6 sales only amounted to 82.92% of Week 5 sales. As a result, total Software sales for Week 6 are down Week on Week.

Hardware-wise, a total of 78 000 units were sold, which is 88.90% of Week 5 sales. Despite the public holiday on Thursday, hardware sales were down, with one exception: the Nintendo 3DS. Its sales were stable, with Week 6 sales amounting to 100.04% of Week 5 sales. As mentioned in this post, the difference is only 11 units.

As for Shin Megami Tensei IV Final, it sold over 96 000 units during the first 5 days: that’s 73.28% of all units shipped to retailers. In comparison, Shin Megami Tensei IV Final sold over 189 000 units during the first few days, with a sellthrough ratio of 80.14% (which means Atlus shipped 131.481 copies at launch). In other words, Shin Megami Tensei IV Final sold half as well as its predecessor, and with a worse sellthrough ratio.

This was already apparent for Media Create before launch, as the number of pre-orders for Shin Megami Tensei IV Final was about 56 000 units (as opposed to 98 000 units for its predecessor). What’s more, Media Create notes that many fans who purchased the original did not come back for this sequel.

The game seems to have had a pretty good reception at launch, so it remains to be seen if those fans will end up buying the game or not, in the upcoming week.
