Media Create sales for Week 6, 2016 (Feb. 08 – 14) [Top 50]

Update: we just added the full Top 50 to this post!

***

Shin Megami Tensei IV Final is one of the games that came out during Week 6 in Japan, and it’s off to a pretty decent start with 96 349 units sold during the first five days (it came out on Wednesday). According to Famitsu, that’s between 60% and 70% of all units shipped to retailers: looks like the game’s performance is well within Atlus’ expectations.

As a comparison, the original Shin Megami Tensei IV sold 188 562 units during the first week, which means that Shin Megami Tensei IV Final did half as well. Considering this isn’t a brand new number entry (like Shin Megami Tensei IV), but instead a “more of the same” sequel, using the same engine and many elements from the original, this seems like a rather good performance (similar to other sequels of the same type).

Now, it remains to be seen how sales will hold up in the upcoming weeks. The game seems to have had a pretty warm reception from players, so it might hold better than your average RPG (which generally get a 70%+ drop during the second week).

Shin Megami Tensei IV FinalNext, we have Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash, which is still selling surprisingly well. During Week 6, 13 095 additional units were sold (-27% compared to Week 5): that brings the total to 86 283 units since launch. It looks like the game will have no trouble selling over 100 000 units, maybe even before the end of the month (early March at the latest). Those Japanese sales are nothing short of surprising, given the poor reception the game got worldwide.

Week 6 had a public holiday on Thursday, so sales of various games on Nintendo platforms held better than usual. For example, Splatoon sold 11 039 units this week (-7%), and despite the Wii U shortages that have been impacting retailers across Japan in the past couple of weeks.

As for Yo-kai Watch Busters, it’s also holding pretty well with 9 297 units sold (-9%). Since Yo-kai Watch 3 will not come out before this Summer, and Yo-kai Sangokushi before April, sales should remain steady in the upcoming weeks.

Unfortunately for Monster Hunter X, the public holiday on Thursday didn’t really have any impact on its sales: the game sold 8 902 units during Week 6 (-34% compared to Week 5). That being said, they remain steady, and at this rate, it’s definitely possible they will reach 3 million at retail alone before the end of the year (which would most likely depend on whether/when a new entry/update is announced).

Monster Strike, on the other hand, sold pretty much as well as during Week 5, with 7 477 units (-5%). Despite mixi clearly overshipping the game at launch, sales have remained surprisingly steady for the game even after the holiday period. Will it manage to sell through its first week shipment in the end? If yes, it’s not going to happen within the next few months.

Next: Super Mario Maker. Its sales are dependent on Wii U sales, and so the shortages in the past couple of weeks have had a noticeable impact. That being said, the game remains pretty popular, with 5 186 units sold (-15%) during Week 6, and 795 531 since launch. It will most definitely reach 800 000 units sold by the end of the month.

As for Hyrule Warriors Legends, it’s slowly sliding towards the exit, with 5 104 units sold during its 3rd week on the market. It’s sold 81 442 units since launch, and there’s no doubt it will reach 100 000 within the next couple of months. Finally, we have Rhythm Heaven: The best+ making its comeback in the Top 20, with 3 433 units sold during Week 6, and over 650 000 units since launch.

Hardware-wise, sales are surprisingly steady for both the Wii U and the Nintendo 3DS. Nintendo’s handheld sold 27 555 units during Week 6, which is only 11 units more compared to Week 5. Unfortunately, that’s significantly worse than during the same week in 2015 (-50%), but there’s a good reason for that: The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3D came out on February 14th last year.

In 2016, the only new release was Shin Megami Tensei IV Final, which wasn’t going to have any significant impact on sales. As mentioned above, it’s a “more of the same” sequel of a game that was originally released on the Nintendo 3DS, which means that fans already owned the handheld. What’s more, the game doesn’t really have any New Nintendo 3DS features and/or improvements, so players didn’t have any reason to upgrade.

As for the Wii U, its sales are also surprisingly steady with only 6 units less compared to Week 5. No, this is most definitely not a typo, and we didn’t forget a couple of 0: the difference is, quite literally, 6 units. Of course, Media Create (and Famitsu) numbers are estimations, and the actual difference isn’t precisely 6 units.

Since shortages are still going on, sales are most definitely going to drop further next week, and will only go up again whenever retailers finally get new shipments. But even then, they will only go back to “normal” numbers, at least until the release of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD and Pokkén Tournament (which has its own bundle).
