Dragon Quest VIII: latest batch of screenshots (Camera Mode, Casino, Alchemy, more)

Today, Square-Enix revealed the usual weekly batch of screenshots for Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King, which comes out in exactly one month in Japan (on August 27th). Those show various elements of the game, starting with the Camera Mode, and more precisely the sharing of pictures via StreetPass.

Dragon Quest VIIICamera Mode

Once you’ve taken a picture via the Camera Mode, you can add various effects to it. You can even make all the characters wear some special clothes (just like in the original, but with even more costumes available), which will definitely look great in your photographs. After taking pictures, you can add one to a Postcard (along with a message), so that you can share it with other players via StreetPass.

When you meet another player, you can rate their pictures and even get special rewards. Square-Enix confirms you will also be able to share pics with other players via the internet.

Casino

If you want to take a breather during the adventure, you can go to the Casino. There, you can use various games such as:

– Roulette
– Slot machine
– Bingo

If you win, you can get some valuable coins, which can then be traded for items.

Monster Battle Road

During your adventure, you will get to encounter tameable monsters: there’s an icon above their head in the field, indicating that you can tame them. They’re actually more powerful than regular monsters, and they even have their own name. Once you’ve defeated and tamed monsters, you can then use them in the Monster Battle Road (which is basically a coliseum for monsters).

There, you will meet Morrie (one of the new playable characters in the Nintendo 3DS version of the game), who was also the manager to the coliseum in the original version of Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King.

At the Monster Battle Road, you can take part in battles against other monsters. There’s seven ranks in total (including one made especially for this new version of the game), and unsurprisingly, battles get tougher the higher the rank.

Alchemy

At one point during the adventure, you will get an item called the Alchemy Pot. As the name implies, it’s a pot that allows you to use alchemy, in order to make items. It’s pretty simple: you add two items in the pot to make a third (more powerful) item. However, there’s a catch: you need to follow recipes in order to make items (but thankfully, an invalid recipe is rejected right away, which means you won’t lose any item if you fail).

The Alchemy Pot has been changed compared to the original. On PS2, you needed to wait a certain amount of time before getting an item via alchemy, but on Nintendo 3DS, the items are made the very moment you add them to the pot. There’s also many more elements to be crafted via alchemy.
