Bandai-Namco has shared some more details about the game, and more precisely the Magnus:

Magnus is the core of combat in Baten Kaitos Ⅰ & Ⅱ HD Remaster. Combine attack, defend, and heal Magnus cards to create powerful combos in battle.

Fire and Water, Light and Dark, Wind and Chronos… These sets of opposing elements must be carefully balanced to achieve maximum power in battle. The wonders of elemental Magnus cards await in Baten Kaitos Ⅰ & Ⅱ HD Remaster.

Merging Magnuses makes more Magnuses! Combine Magnus cards in battle and you may walk away with a new, more powerful Magnus to use later.

And for those who are afraid to find themselves out of money, here’s a handy tip to get your hands on some (in-game) cash:

Short on cash in Baten Kaitos? It’s a SNAP to earn more! Just take pictures of enemies and sell them for profit. Get out there and bring me pictures of lizards!

  • Mizuti (voiced by Eriko Nakayama): a mysterious person who hides their true identity behind an equally mysterious mask. While they can appear rather full of themselves, going as far as talking in the third person, there’s something about them that makes them hard to hate.

Bandai-Namco has shared a new trailer for Baten Kaitos I & II HD Remaster:

They also shared a preview of the Digital Artbook (pre-order bonus for the digital version in Japan):

July 12th

Bandai-Namco has shared some details about the improvements made to the games in Baten Kaitos I & II HD Remaster.

Some of the graphics were redrawn, such as part of the backgrounds, but also character graphics, and the battle UI. The menu screen was also refreshed. All those improvements were made so that players can enjoy the games more comfortably.

Also, the Magnus screen saw its layout improved, a sorting function was added, and navigation was made easier.

However, some elements remain unchanged from the original releases: the in-game map, some screens, some character graphics, etc..

July 11th

The Magnus are affected by the passage of time. The cards change as time goes by (it is said they “age”), and their effect changes accordingly. It’s important to keep track of those changes, and keep them in mind when using the Magnus in battle.

For example, the “Bamboo Shoots” Magnus (which allows you to recover some strength when used in battle) grows into “Young Bamboo” (an Attack Magnus) after a few hours. If you wait a little longer, that Magnus will age into a Fishing Rod!

Another example: the “Fresh Meat” Magnus. If you wait too long before using it, it will spoil and turn into the “Rotten Meat” Magnus.

But aging isn’t the only way to get new Magnus, you can also use Magna Mix. If you combine the “Sparkling Snow” and “Love Syrup” Magnus, you will get the “Shaved Ice of Love” (which increases resistance to fire).

For those who have a sweet tooth, there are several Magnus based on sweets (including Japanese sweets). Connoisseur only swear by the “Original” series. The “Original Tsukushu no Ohagi” (Japanese name) Magnus increase HP when eaten. However, it’s so popular that it sells out quickly, making it hard to obtain! Another such Magnus is “Suama” (Japanese name).

If you’re more of a Pudding person, the “Custard Pudding” Magnus (with a cherry on top) is the Magnus for you. Not only is it delicious, it also heals negative statuses. Try combining it with Soy Sauce in battle and see what happens!

There’s also several unusual Magnus, including a few based on Pac-Man.

July 6th

Today’s first keyword: Magnus.

In the world of Baten Kaitos, there’s a system that allows one to seal a wide variety of items (equipment, weapons, etc.) by absorbing their Magna Essence (said to be the essence of all things) and storing it on cards. The user can then return the item to its original form by using its card. Such cards are known as Magnus.

And the second keyword is: Magnus Battles.

In the two Baten Kaitos games, the battle system revolves around those Magnus cards. Battles take place in real time, and you need quick judgment in order to use the appropriate cards (offense, defense, recovery) at the right time. Also, you need to take into account the strengths and weaknesses of enemies and the attributes of your Magnus cards. The battle system offers a lot of depth, with many possible combinations for use to choose from.

July 4th

First keyword: Wings of the Heart.

Baten Kaitos takes place on a continent floating in the sky. The inhabitants sport wings on their back. Those wings are normally invisible, but whenever someone is feeling nervous or concentrating really hard, they show up as an aura. The source of those wings is one’s heart, which is why their appearance and shape are affected by the person’s state of mind.

Second keyword: Spirit Possession.

In the past, at the boundary between this world and another dimension, two spirits from different worlds could meet and unite. The otherwordly spirit is called a Guardian Spirit. People who can hear them are called Spiriters, and are extremely rare. Those Spiriters are said to gain great wisdom and power through their interaction with the Guardian Spirit, so much so that Spirit Possession is believed to affect the very fate of the world.

Unlike most RPGs (where you simply play as one of the characters), in Baiten Kaitos, you actually control a Guardian Spirit who dwells inside the main character. Throughout the game, the protagonist occasionally talks directly to the Guardian Spirit, and you have to choose between different options. Depending on your answers, the protagonist will trust you more or less. You may also gain some bonuses in battle…

And finally, here’s a commercial for the collection:

Baten Kaitos I & II HD Remaster (Switch) comes out on September 14th in Japan, and September 15th in Europe and North America.
