***Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DSBack in February, the last batch of DLC for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS was released. Of course, that doesn’t mean that updates will stop: both versions of the game will keep receiving them when needed. In fact, Nintendo announced today that a brand new update would be released sometime this month.

This update will bring both Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS to Ver. 1.1.6, but will (naturally) not add anything. The purpose of this update is to adjust the game balance. Unfortunately, Nintendo doesn’t specificy what will be adjusted (characters, attacks, etc.), and it’s unlikely the company will provide more detailed patchnotes.

Here’s the official patchnotes in English:

Adjustments have been made to make for a more pleasant gaming experience.

Nintendo specifies that this update will be required to play online and use the online features of the game. On Nintendo 3DS, you will not be able to play with players who have already updated the game to Ver. 1.1.6 if you’re still running an older version. Also, please note that replay data recorded with earlier versions of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U / Nintendo 3DS will not be compatible with Ver. 1.1.6..

Head after the break for more details about the patch for each version!

Wii U

On Wii U, the update will require 61MB of free space on your Wii U or external HDD if you already have Ver. 1.1.5 installed (32MB in Europe). If you don’t, you will need up to 3.1GB of free space (the total size depends on the version of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U you have. The older the version, the bigger the download size of the patch).

To download this update, you will have two options:

  • let the console do its thing if you have automatic downloads activated. You should have the latest version installed the next time you turn on your Wii U.
  • if you don’t, you can launch Super Smash Bros. for Wii U from the Home Menu (not the Quick Start Menu), in order to trigger the download and install of the update.

To check out that you have the latest version of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, simply launch the game: you should see “Ver. 1.1.6” at the bottom right corner of the screen.

On Nintendo 3DS, the update will require 325MB / 2 600 blocks of free space on your SD card (442.5MB / 3 538 blocks in Europe), and contains all the previous updates for the game (which is why the size if the same regardless of the version you’re on right now).

To download it, you will have three options:

  • launch the game from the Home Menu, while being connected to the internet: you should get a prompt when doing so;
  • search for Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS on the Nintendo eShop;
  • use the option on the Nintendo eShop settings page.
