Nintendo: sales in France in 2018 (Nintendo Switch + games, Nintendo 3DS)

Last week, Philippe Lavoué shared some sales data for Nintendo in France in 2018. He revealed that the company reached its goal regarding the Nintendo Switch: total sales reached 2.04 million units, and the goal was 2 million units by the end of the year!

The company sold no less than 1.13 million units of its console, as opposed to 911 000 units during the launch year. Sales were steady throughout the year, but they saw a significant boost during the holiday season. Nintendo managed to sell over 100 000 units of its popular console during some weeks, something that was the norm during the Wii era. The Nintendo Switch was the most popular console last year, in France.

For 2019, Nintendo expects to sell at least 1.1 million units of its console.

Software-wise, 5 of the 10 best-selling games in the country are Nintendo Switch games:

  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is #3 with 1.2 million units (as opposed to 500 000 units in 2017)
  • Super Mario Party is #5
  • Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! / Let’s Go, Eevee is #7
  • Super Mario Odyssey is #8
  • Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is #9

While Philippe Lavoué doesn’t provide sales data for those games, he does specify that they all sold over 400 000 units at retail alone.

As for the 3DS, it sold 254 000 units in 2018, as opposed to 507 000 units in 2017. The handheld is clearly on the way to retirement, and it looks like it may not reach 6 million units LTD (it’s currently sitting at 5.5 million units).
