The Pokémon Company: over 2 billion sales at retail

The Pokémon series is by far one of the most lucrative in the world. It’s been going for almost 20 years, and during that time, countless games have been released, hundred of anime episode have been produced (not counting the 17th movies), thousands of cards have been made, along with the plethora of goodies / merchandise based on the franchise.

Today, thanks to Licence! Global, we know that global sales for The Pokémon Company (the company dealing with the Pokémon IP) have reached 2 billion dollars at retail, in 2014. This includes the video games, but also the Pokémon Trading Card game, animation (TV series, movies, etc.) and a wide variety of licensed lifestyle products. It’s actually one of the most diverse franchises in entertainment in the world!

As a comparison, retail sales for The Pokémon Company reached 1.5 billion dollars in 2013, which means a 500 million dollars increase since last year… In other words, the Pokémon franchise is stronger than ever.

Regarding video games, Pokémon Omega Ruby / Alpha Sapphire were launched back in November, and with just 6 weeks of sales, they became the best-selling set of video games in 2014. Since the launch of Pokémon Red / Green in February 1996 (in Japan), over 270 million Pokémon games have been sold globally.

As for the Trading Card Games, over 21.5 billion cards have been shipped globally. In 2014, The Pokémon TCG was a leader in the TCG segment, and the four expansions released achieved record sales.
