Microsoft in talks with Nintendo and Sony to fight against DDoS attacks

For any company relying on online services, DDoS attacks are a real nightmare: the engineers at Microsoft and Sony certainly didn’t spend the holidays celebrating merrily at home, they were trying to deal with a massive DDoS attack from the Lizard Squad, that rendered both Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network almost inoperable for several days in a row.

And as consoles are relying more and more on online services (online play, web eShop, cloud, etc.), those DDoS attacks are really bad news for console makers. This is probably the reason why Microsoft has decided to go and talk with both Nintendo and Sony, in order too coperate against those DDoS attacks (by sharing knowledge, solutions and more).

Phil Spencer from Microsoft said as much to Game Informer recently, though he didn’t tell us how those talks were progressing. One thing’s for sure: all three companies have nothing to lose by cooperating against DDoS attacks. Even if they don’t directly impact all companies, they certainly do so indirectly. Each of these attacks leads to more irritation, fear and mistrust from users, which is quite problematic as all three console makers are putting more and more emphasing on online services.
