Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door – Overview trailer, more footage, and more details

In less than a month, players on Nintendo Switch will be able to (re-)discover the second entry in the Paper Mario series, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. And ahead of that awaited release, Nintendo has shared the usual overview trailer for the game!

This trailer showcases everything the game has to offer: its quirky characters, its unique battle system, its colourful papery world, and more.

If that trailer isn’t enough for you, and you want to see more of the game in action, here’s some additional footage:

And that’s not all! Here’s two short trailers for the game:

Next: some fresh, 100% paper-based details!

In Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, you get to meet a wide variety of characters, each one more quirky than the last. Some even accompany you during your journey: handy companions who lend you a hand in battle, and also help you explore the world. Each time one joins your “party”, you gain access to special abilities that will prove key to progressing through your journey, and unlocking the mysteries of the Thousand-Year Door.

Here’s some of the companions Mario will encounter during his journey:

  • Goombella: a very knowledgeable female Goomba who can give you all sort of information about your current location, characters standing in front of you, but also enemies.
  • Koops: a young Koopa who joins Mario in order to become as strong as his father. He can retreat into his shell and hit enemies with it.
  • Flurrie: a former actress with a fiery personality. She can blow out a strong wind, which is pretty handy at uncovering secret passages.
  • Mini-Yoshi: he joins Mario’s party after Mario rescues him. Despite his size, he can carry Mario on his back (allowing him to move much faster) and help him cross gaps.

Various other characters appear in the game, such as:

  • Princess Peach, who is kidnapped and then held captive in some curious laboratory;
  • Bowser himself makes an appearance… as a playable character!
  • and various other mysterious characters…

As for battles, they start when you bump into or jump on an enemy in the field. Battles take place on a theatre stage (complete with live audience!), and feature turn-based gameplay.

The game also features a badge system. When equipped, badges provide various bonuses: they increase the number of moves Mario can use in battle, strengthen the abilities of Mario and his companions, and more. However, there’s a limit to the number of badges you can equip at a given time: the total of BP (Badge Points) cannot exceed the total of Mario’s BPs. In other words, you need to think carefully about which badges to equip and make the most of them!

And just like in many RPGs, you can also use items in battle: those can be used to heal Mario and his companions, but also to attack. Knowing which items to use and when is key to get the upper hand in battle.

If you’re not too confident in your battle skills, you can ask a special Toad for help. This Battle Master Toad can be found in various locations throughout the game, and if you talk to him, you can have him help you practice various moves, guarding, and more. He will even teach you the secrets of battle!

Finally, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door features various extras, such as:

  • Gallery: collect Star Pieces and Shines hidden throughout the world to unlock concept art and music tracks;
  • Pianta Parlor: play various mini-games, including a picture-match slot machine and mini-games based on Mario’s transformations;
  • The Pit of 100 Trials: a special underground dungeon with 100 floors. You have to battle through a series of consecutive battles. The deeper you go, the more powerful the enemy you encounter, but you also come across useful items!

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (Switch) comes out on May 23rd worldwide!
