DSi Shop: Nintendo details unused points refund procedure (Japan)

A few months ago, Nintendo announced that the Nintendo DSi Shop would be terminated on March 31st, 2017. It will happen in three phases:

  • September 30th: after that date, you will no longer be able to add Nintendo Points to the Nintendo DSi Shop;
  • March 31st: after that date, you will no longer be able to purchase games from the Nintendo DSi Shop;
  • Unspecified date (after March 31st, obviously): after that date, you will no longer be able to re-download purchased games anymore (unless you transfer them to a Nintendo 3DS).

Naturally, Nintendo recommends users go and redeem all their remaining Nintendo Points cards before September 30th, and use their remaining points before March 31st. But in Japan, users will also be able to get a refund for any unused Nintendo Points they have.

There will be two disctint procedures:

Nintendo Points already redeemed

If you already have redeemed your Nintendo Points, you will be able to get a refund from April 3rd to September 29th, via the following methods:

  1. balance transfer to your Nintendo eShop account (Wii U / Nintendo 3DS)
  2. transfer to your bank account
  3. cash receipt at Lawson convenience stores

Whichever method you chose, you will need to connect your Nintendo DSi or Nintendo DSi XL to the internet.

Nintendo Points not redeemed (unused Nintendo Points cards)

If you don’t redeem your Nintendo Points cards before September 30th, no problem: you will be able to get a refund from 2018. Unfortunately, Nintendo doesn’t tell us when and how, but one thing’s for sure: you will need the code(s) on the Nintendo Points card.

Right now, it doesn’t look like Nintendo is planning to have a refund procedure in Europe or North America, but the official FAQ implies users will be able to transfer Nintendo Points cards directly to the Nintendo eShop down the line.
