Week 27, 2017, Summer Season (Dengeki)

Dengeki notes that the Summer season is finally upon us, and shares some data from last year.

During the Summer season, in 2016, the market was down overall:

  • Hardware: 14.2 billion Yen (-24.1%)
  • Software: 25 billion Yen (-21.1%)
  • Total: 39.2 billion Yen (-22.2%)

This was a pretty harsh Summer, with total sales not even reaching 40 billion Yen. There’s several reasons to explain that major drop, with two of them being Yo-kai Watch 3: Sushi / Tempura underperforming, and Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer released in Summer 215 (there was no such title last year, so this hurt sales).

During the past 10 years, the peak for the video game market in Japan for the Summer period is 131.4 billion Yen… as you can see, we’re now pretty far from that, with sales down to nearly 1/3 of the best Summer.

But this year, there’s some major releases to boost sales, such as Dragon Quest XI: Sugisarishi Toki o Motomete (Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation 4), Splatoon (Nintendo Switch), New Minna no Golf (PlayStation 4).

Regarding Dragon Quest XI, Dengeki notes that if it follows the same sales trajectory as Dragon Quest IX (the latest mainline, non-MMO entry), which ended up selling over 4 million units, it would be a real boon for the market as a whole.

After all, if it sold as much as its predecessor, it would bring about 26 billion Yen, which is already more than the 25 billion Yen recorded for Software last year. In other words, with just how game, the market as a whole would be up Year on Year!

What’s more, Dengeki is also expected an increase in Hardware sales, thanks to the Nintendo Switch and Splatoon. The real question is how much the market will grow this Summer.

Next, here’s Software sales for each platform:
