[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 6, 2018 (February 5th – February 11th) [Top 50]

This week see the arrival of several entries in the Top 20 Software from Media Create, but none of them is on a Nintendo platform. But that doesn’t mean there wasn’t a single Nintendo Switch or Nintendo 3DS release… there was one: Gal Metal, on Nintendo Switch. Unfortunately, it did not chart, which means it sold less than 3 373 units… not the best of results!

At least, the various Nintendo Switch games in the Top 20 kept on selling steadily. That’s the case of Splatoon 2, with 23 461 units sold (-9%). It’s become the very first multi-million seller on Nintendo Switch, with 2 021 028 units sold at retail alone. It seems highly unlikely Splatoon 2 is going to stop selling any time soon, so it definitely would not be farfetched to expect it to reach 3 million units LTD (maybe this very year).

As for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, it’s drop week on week is almost the same as for Splatoon 2: only -10%. It sold 19 210 additional units, bringing the total since launch to 1 327 107 units. Definitely one of the must-haves for new Nintendo Switch owners!

Wondering how Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle is faring in Japan? It’s actually doing pretty well, with 15 755 units sold this week (-26% Week on Week). As of this week, it’s already sold 130 000 units at retail (129 815 units to be precise), which means it should have no trouble selling at least 200 000 units LTD (thanks, word of mouth)!

Super Mario Odyssey also keeps on selling, with no sign of sales significantly slowing down for now. This week, it sold 13 912 units (-13% Week on Week), bringing the total since launch to over 1.6 million units (1 601 866 units to be precise). With this game, the question isn’t really whether it will manage to reach 2 million units, but when. Answer: definitely this year!

Finally, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is yet another Nintendo Switch game that just keeps on selling. Given the extremely positive reception and strong word of mouth, it’s no real surprise, especially as more and more people can find a Nintendo Switch in stores easily. It certainly makes you wonder just how long it’s going to keep selling at this steady pace. Since launch, over 859 764 units have been sold at retail alone.

Next, let’s take a look at the games in the second half of the Top 20:

• 12./09. [3DS] Pokemon Ultra Sun / Ultra Moon (Pokemon Co.) – 9.654 / 1.548.683 (-12%). Despite anemic sales for the Nintendo 3DS, this one is still selling pretty steadily;
• 13./10. [3DS] Mario Party: The Top 100 <ETC> (Nintendo) {2017.12.28} (¥4.980) – 6.436 / 155.782 (-9%). It’s certainly interesting to see that one stil hanging around in the Top 20!
• 14./07. [NSW] The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (Bethesda Softworks) – 5.625 / 19.547 (-60%). Better than expected for its second week;
• 15./14. [NSW] Dragon Ball: Xenoverse 2 for Nintendo Switch (Bandai Namco Games) – 4.512 / 114.728 (+20%). A second week of increase, thanks to additional shipments;
• 16./13. [NSW] 1-2-Switch (Nintendo) – 4.477 / 395.563 (+2%). Yes, it’s still selling steadily!
• 17./11. [3DS] Yo-kai Watch Busters 2: Hihou Legend Banbarayaa – Sword / Magnum (Level 5) – 4.437 / 501.342 (-27%). 500 000 units sold as of this week, though it’s most likely going to be the last time we see this game in the Top 20 for a little while;
• 18./12. [NSW] Arms (Nintendo) – 4.322 / 364.806 (-3%). It lost 6 places this week, but that’s almost exclusively due to the new releases as sales only dropped by 3%;
• 19./15. [NSW] Pokken Tournament DX (Pokemon Co.) – 4.320 / 222.781 (+16%). Thanks to additional shipments, sales are once again on the rise… and it’s not over yet, as the game is still facing supply issues at some stores;
• 20./18. [NSW] Monster Hunter Double Cross: Nintendo Switch Ver. (Capcom) – 3.373 / 214.492 (+6%). It looks like Nintendo Switch owners also want their own share of Monster Hunting action, with sales once again on the rise. It will be interesting to see how long it manages to stay in the Top 20.

This week, Nintendo Switch sales are slightly down Week on Week, due to lower shipments. Unfortunately, it looks like our prediction of sales “only going up from now on” were not spot on, though it’s not like they dropped a cliff either. With 43 404 units sold this week, the Nintendo Switch is doing fairly well, especially on the Software front.

Right now, stock issues in Japan have dramatically improved over last year, and the long queues and lotteries seem to be a thing of the past. It’s generally possible for someone to find on in store, though they may have to try more than one store before finding one. In a way, it’s a “good” thing the Q1 line-up is so sparse. The console should reach 400 000 units sold in 2018 next week.

As for the Nintendo 3DS, sales remain anemic, with only 10 516 units, and the lack of new releases doesn’t really help… not that there’s much left that could have a significant impact on sales anyway.
