[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 41, 2017 (October 9th – 15th) [Top 50]
Media Create
Week 39 was already a slow week for the Japanese market, but Week 40 did manage to do worse. There are a few entries in the Top 20 by Media Create, but they all sold pretty poor. For example, Lost Sphear only sold about 13 000 units on the two platforms it was released on, with 5 770 units sold for the Nintendo Switch version.
In comparison, Tokyo RPG Factory’s previous game, I am Setsuna, sold 33 629 units during its launch week… on PlayStation 4 only. If you add sales from the PS Vita version, you end up with 61 000 units sold. As you can see, to say that Lost Sphear didn’t sell quite as much as its predecessor would be quite the understatement.
It’s not clear why Lost Sphear sold poorly, though it’s probably safe to assume players were not that impressed with I am Setsuna to begin with. The higher price point most likely didn’t help either. It doesn’t look like there has ever been much interest in the game, and Square-Enix didn’t push the game as hard as they did I am Setsuna.
This week, Splatoon 2 was almost #1 of sales, with 19 622 units sold. Thanks to steady Nintendo Switch shipments, sales are equally steady (only -12%). The same can be said of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, which sold 13 321 units this week. Sales were flat, wtih a 1% drop. Unfortunately, we will have to wait until next week for them to reach the 750 000 units threshold!
Next, Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser’s Minions had a better second week than expected (especially after the disappointing debut), with 12 215 units sold: that’s a 53% drop from launch week. There’s no doubt the public holiday on Monday helped sales a fair bit, and that otherwise, the drop would be closer to -70%.
Pokkén Tournament DX didn’t really benefit from the public holiday, but still sold pretty decently: 8 367 units this week. Unfortunately, just like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, it will have to wait until next week for the next sales milestone (in that case, 100 000 units). It’s now sold 97 135 units since launch.
Finally, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is still enjoying steady sales, with 6 088 units sold this week (-2%). If it can sell that well during slow week, it certainly bodes well for the rest of the year. Maybe it could even top 1 million units this very year (combined with Wii U version and digital sales for both platforms, obviously).
Next, here’s how the games in the second half of the Media Create Top 50 have been faring:
- 14./09. [NSW] Fire Emblem Warriors (Koei Tecmo) – 4.016 / 53.531 (-50%). Nothing much to say about this game, which is following a pretty standard sales trajectory so far;
- 15./14. [NSW] Monster Hunter Double Cross: Nintendo Switch Ver. (Capcom) – 3.966 / 155.634 (-17%). Sales remain steady, though pretty uneventful;
- 16./18. [3DS] The Snack World: TreJarers (Level 5) – 3.939 / 180.898 (-5%). Another game with steady sales, thanks to the public holiday on Monday;
- 17./17. [NSW] Dragon Ball: Xenoverse 2 for Nintendo Switch (Bandai Namco Games) – 3.815 / 44.239 (-12%). Another week with steady sales;
- 18./16. [3DS] Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age # <RPG> (Square Enix) {2017.07.29} (¥5.980) – 3.659 / 1.741.582 (-16%). Probably one of the last weeks in the Top 20 for this game;
- 19./21. [3DS] Animal Crossing: New Leaf – Welcome amiibo (Nintendo) – 3.497 / 253.665. Due to low sales for the whole market, this one makes yet another comeback in the Top 20.

This week, Nintendo shipped more or less the same amount of Nintendo Switch, and so sales were steady: about 40 000 units were sold. It doesn’t look like we should be expecting any major increase in sales until Super Mario Odyssey is released, next week.
It does look like Nintendo is saving consoles for the big day (it’s unlikely 40 000 units per week is the maximum amount allowed by their current production capacities), though it’s not clear how many units are being withheld each week.
As for the Nintendo 3DS, sales once again dropped this week, but it’s hardly surprising during such a slow week (without any new releases). The console sold about 20 000 units, which is slightly less than last year during the same week (about 27 000). 2017 sales are still tracking ahead of 2016 sales, but it’s truly the holiday period that will determine whether sales will drop or not for the full year.
Finally, the Wii U sold 58 units this week.
