[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 33, 2017 (August 14th – August 20th) [Top 50]

This week doesn’t have any new releases on Nintendo platforms in the Top 20 from Media Create.
The Nintendo 3DS version of Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Past is dominating sales once more, with 67 705 units sold. That’s a 42% compared to the previous week, that would have been worse if not for the second part of Obon at the beginning of the week. Still, the game has already sold well over 1.6 million units on Nintendo 3DS alone, and is well on its way to 2 million units (not for another few months, though!).
Splatoon 2 had quite the drop this week: -61%, with “only” 34 108 units sold. But you only need to look at the Hardware sales below to understand what happened: Nintendo Switch sales plummeted, and as a result Splatoon 2 sales also took a hit. It’s really nothing to worry about: sales will go back up when Nintendo can ship more units (which might be earlier than expected).
As for The Snack World: Trejarers, it had a “standard” second week with 25 674 units sold (-74%). Just like launch week, those are good sales, but nothing really mindblowing. It’s a bit too early to say if the game has potential on the long run, but so far, it’s clear this is no Yo-kai Watch-level phenomenom.
The drop for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is a bit softer than for Splatoon 2, because it’s less dependent of Hardware sales (most of the Nintendo Switch units sold are Splatoon 2 bundles). It sold 13 589 units this week (-21%), and will reach 650 000 units next week (it’s currently sitting at 646 483 units).
As for ARMS, it’s holding rather well with 6 439 units sold this week (-18%). It’s not clear how much of the sales are from Amazon.co.jp Nintendo Switch bundles, though. One thing’s for sure though: sales have finally topped 200 000 units, which is quite the success for a new IP in the fighting game genre… and it’s only the beginning: there’s no doubt the game will keep selling on the long run, though obviously not at Splatoon levels.
Hey! Pikmin is also selling steadily, with 5 960 units sold this week (-13%). This one should be able to top 200 000 units sold by the end of the year, unless it never resurfaces during holiday weeks. 120 710 units have already been sold since launch, but now that the Summer holidays are over, Hey! Pikmin should drop from the Top 20 pretty quickly…
On the other hands, Animal Crossing: New Leaf – Welcome amiibo is just unstoppable, really. It sold 5 789 units, making it one of the few games that actually saw its sales increase this week (+8%, to be precise). This third edition of the game has already sold 224 166 units since launch, in November 2015, and it could very well reach 300 000 units sold before the end of the year.
Finally, we have The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild at #10, with 5 268 units sold. The drop in sales is in line with the other non-Splatoon 2 games in the Top 20, which is a good sign: it shows that even during non-holiday week, this Zelda game is selling at a steady pace. 566 032 units have already been sold, and there’s no doubt 600 000 units will be topped in the upcoming months.
If you add last known Wii U sales (133 024 units), the game has already sold 699 056 units. To reach 1 million units this year, the remaining 300 944 units need to be sold during the next 19 weeks, so 15 839 units/week.
Now, let’s take a look at the games in the second half of the Top 20:
- 12./17. [3DS] Pokémon Sun / Moon (Pokémon Co.) – 5.048 / 3.314.619 (+4%). Another game that didn’t see a drop in sales this week, partly thanks to Obon. Sales in the upcoming weeks are going to be pretty interesting, what with The Pokémon Company finally talking about Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon again;
- 13./14. [3DS] Sumikko Gurashi: Koko, Dokonan Desu? (Nippon Columbia) – 4.934 / 45.288 (-21%). Now that the Summer holidays are over, sales are (logically) down, but remain quite steady so far. 50 000 units will be topped within the next couple of weeks;
- 15./11. [3DS] Layton’s Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaire’s Conspiracy (Level 5) – 4.848 / 120.036 (-32%). Decent sales for the latest Layton game, but nothing compared to its predecessor (even those on Nintendo 3DS);
- 16./07. [3DS] Dai Gyakuten Saiban 2: Naruhodou Ryuunosuke no Kakugo (Capcom) – 4.829 / 85.447 (-55%). Probably the last week in the Top 20 for this game, which should at least reach 100 000 units in the upcoming weeks;
- 20./20. [3DS] Mario Kart 7 (Nintendo) – 3.535 / 2.806.124 (+5%). And anpther week in the Top 20 for the unstoppable Mario Kart 7!

This week saw a massive drop in Nintendo Switch sales, as Nintendo almost didn’t ship any additional units. It wouldn’t have been a problem if retailers had kept some stock for the second half of Obon, but it looks like most of them simply sold everything they could last week (which is perfectly understandable: demand is as strong as ever). The end result? Only 22 277 units sold, which is by far one of the worst week since launch.
Fortunately, things can only go up from now, and it looks like Nintendo had planned to ship more units to coincide with the release of the first major post-launch update for Splatoon 2. It’s not clear how many units the company is shipping this week, but one thing’s for sure: shortages are there to stay.
On Thursday, Monster Hunter XX Nintendo Switch Ver. is releasing on Thursday, and comes with a special Nintendo Switch bundle. However, the impact on sales should be limited, as the bundle itself is pretty limited. As for the game itself, it’s already available on Nintendo 3DS, so it’s unlikely demand will be strong enough to drive Nintendo Switch sales… not to mention that the console itself is still supply-constrained!
As for the Nintendo 3DS, it sales did drop again this week, with “only” 34 596 units sold. Fortunately, sales are still up Year on Year, as the Nintendo 3DS sold 28 807 units during the same week in 2016. The upcoming weeks are going to be pretty interesting, now that the Summer holidays are over, and the next truly major release not coming out for another 3 months (Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon).
Overall, we can expect some pretty calm weeks ahead for the Nintendo 3DS!
Finally, the Wii U sold 151 units this week.
