[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 14, 2017 (April 3 – April 9) [Top 50]

This week was pretty quiet overall, with only 2 entries in the Top 20. One of them is on Nintendo 3DS: Kawaii Pet to Kurasou! Wan Nyan & Mini Mini Animal, that sold 3 631 units. A rather unsurprising debut for such a title!
April is generally a pretty slow months for video games sales in Japan, what with the end of Spring break. As such, pretty much all games in the Top 20 saw a drop in sales this week, which allows some evergreen titles to make their comeback in the Top 20.
Monster Hunter XX sales were almost cut by half this week (-49%), with 65 672 units sold. It’s currently standing at 1 322 152 units sold since launch, and since sales are unlikely to go up until the Golden Week (at the end of the month), we will most likely have to wait until May before the 1.5 million milestone is reached.
Next, let’s take a look at how the various Nintendo Switch launch titles are faring in the Top 20:
- 02./05. [NSW] The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Nintendo) – 23.016 / 354.404 (-21%). Without any real competition, this is still the game the majority of new Nintendo Switch owners end up purchasing with the console.
The Wii U version of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild sold 6 487 units this week (-20%), and 95 806 units since launch, and is showing surprisingly steady sales. It should reach 100 000 units within the next two weeks. Combined, both versions have sold 450 210 units since launch, which means the 500 000 units milestone will be reached this month.
- 04./07. [NSW] 1-2-Switch (Nintendo) – 12.418 / 166.319 (-25%). As the second most popular game on Nintendo Switch, 1-2-Switch has been selling steadily. It will be interesting to see if the release of more popular multiplayer titles such as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe will have a negative (or positive!) impact on sales;
- 15./22. [NSW] Super Bomberman R (Konami) – 4.233 / 66.617. It’s steadily climbing towards the 100 000 units milestone, that it should be able to reach in the upcoming months. just like 1-2-Switch, it will be interesting to see if games such as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe or Splatoon 2 will have any sort of impact on sales.
Mario Sports Superstars had a surprisingly good second week, after a rather lackluster launch and during a pretty slow week. It sold 18 765 units (-42%), which brings the total since launch to 51 181. It should be able to sell over 100 000 units LTD, but it will not be able to reach that milestone until next month (at the earliest).
As for Pokémon Sun and Moon, it’s selling as steadily as ever, with 6 972 additional units this week (-21%). That brings the total since launch to 3 236 826 units, not counting the dual-pack and digital sales.
And finally, here’s how much the games in the second half of the Top 20 sold this week:
- 13./15. [3DS] Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS (Nintendo) – 5.717 / 1.015.110 (-19%). It doesn’t look like anything is going to stop this one, and it’s highly likely it’s going to remain in the Top 20 for most of the remaining weeks this year;
- 18./21. [3DS] Animal Crossing: New Leaf – Welcome amiibo (Nintendo) – 4.017 / 159.150. Nothing can stop Animal Crossing, definitely Nintendo’s most popular francise last gen (Wii U / 3DS);
- 19./29. [WIU] Minecraft: Wii U Edition (Microsoft Game Studios) – 4.014 / 313.703. Just like Animal Crossing: New Leaf, it makes its comeback in the Top 20 this week, which is remarkable given the extremely low Wii U sales in the past few weeks.

This week, all platforms are impacted by the drop in sales, though some platforms are faring better than others. It’s the case of the Nintendo Switch, which is due to the shortages (which are still persisting to this very day). Basically, everything that is shipped to retailers is (almost) immediately sold, and Nintendo has been unable to keep with demand.
Each week, the total amount of Nintendo Switch sold depends exclusively on the amount of units Nintendo ships to retailers, and it’s not going to change any time soon. In other words, the drops (and increases!) in sales are going to remain tied to the number of units Nintendo can ship to retailers for the time being.
Nintendo 3DS sales also dropped this week, but they remain steady with 25 685 units sold. But more importantly, said sales are still (slightly) better than they were last year during the same week (24 115 units), which is a pretty positive sign.
Granted, the difference isn’t all that big, but since the Nintendo 3DS should be significantly down Year on Year (aged platform, lackluster Q1 line-up), this “increase” is more significant that it might seem at first glance.
Finally, the Wii U sold only 358 units this week.
