[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 22, 2018 (May 28th – June 3rd) [Top 50]

Week 22 once again saw the release of quite a few games (and multiplatform ones, to boot), which is why there’s plenty of new faces in the Top 20 from Media Create.

BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle is one of the games released last week in Japan, and it did rather poorly. It sold about 16 000 units at launch, with 4 271 units on Nintendo Switch specifically (and 11 696 units on PlayStation 4).

That’s a really poor debut, as the latest BlazBlue game (BlazBlue Central Fiction, released in 2016, sold over 43 000 units at launch on PlayStation 4 and 3). Unfortunately, it’s unlikely to sell in the long run like Pokkén Tournament DX or Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2, as sales for the series are generally pretty frontloaded (BlazBlue Central Fiction sold about 70 000 units LTD, for example).

Next: Usotsuki Hime to Moumoku Ouji, which had a pretty decent debut with over 17 000 units sold across all platforms. Quite interestingly, Media Create reports extremely similar sales for the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 versions: 6 412 units for the former, and 6 487 units for the latter. The PlayStation Vita is further below, with 4 519 units sold. It will certainly be interesting to see how the game fares in the upcoming weeks!

Finally, Shantae: Half-Genie Hero – Ultimate Edition somehow managed to chart, with 3 303 units sold: a pretty respectable debut, though it’s the only week it will manage to be in the Top 20 from Media Create.

Thanks to yet another slight increase in Hardware sales, various Nintendo Switch games have seen their sales go up this week. That’s the case of Splatoon 2, which sold 14 317 units this week (+6%). As the release of the Octo Expansion draws near, and with the Summer holidays in August, it doesn’t look like sales are going to slow down any time soon. They’re currently at 2 350 839 units LTD, at retail alone.

Unfortunately, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze isn’t one of those that saw its sales increased. It sold less this week: 11 534 units (-13%), though at least the drop remains limited. It should keep on selling steadily at least until the end of the Summer holiday seasons.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe saw an even bigger increase in sales, with 10 656 units sold this week (+16%). This allows it to go over the 10 000 units/week threshold again, though it’s not clear how long it will manage to remain above it. Over 1 562 148 copies of the games have been sold so far, at retail alone.

As for Kirby Star Allies, it sales are perfectly flat: +0%, with 8 655 units sold. As expected, the sales trajectory of this game is pretty similiar to the Nintendo 3DS entries, and we can safely expect it to keep selling steadily at least through the end of the year. It’s already sold 517 963 units at retail alone, and it’s pretty likely it will end up a million-seller (probably not this year).

Speaking of million-sellers, the Nintendo Switch version of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has finally sold over 1 million units at retail alone. This is a fantastic result for a Zelda game on console in Japan, and as mentioned several times before, it’s now pretty much guaranteed to become the best-selling entry in Japan (combined with the Wii U version, and including digital sales). The question is: when?

Next, let’s take a look at how games in the second half of the Top 20 from Media Create are faring:

12./11. [NSW] Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 01: Variety Kit (Nintendo) – 6.271 / 180.391 (-17%). Sales remain good enough during this slow period. Summer holidays should be a much more interesting one for this particular game;
14./15. [NSW] Super Mario Odyssey (Nintendo) – 4.964 / 1.735.133 (+15%). Nice increase this week;
18./17. [3DS] Pokemon Ultra Sun / Ultra Moon (Pokemon Co.) – 3.438 / 1.641.634 (+5%). Sales were already up the previous one, but game sold 5% better this week. It’s not clear how much of this is due to the recent announce of Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! / Eevee!, though;
20./18. [NSW] The Snack World: TreJarers Gold (Level 5) – 2.946 / 88.623 (-7%). Probably the last week in the Top 20 from Media Create for this game…

This week, Hardware sales are once again on the rise for the Nintendo Switch, with 40 587 units sold: that’s roughly 4 000 units more than during Week 21. The difference with the same week last year is once again quite striking: the console only sold 23 524 units last year.

As mentioned last week, May, June, and early July were pretty bad for the Nintendo Switch last year, due to shortages. Therefore, it’s not surprising that it would do much better in 2018 (though it definitely can sell more than it currently is), especially with a stronger line-up. Mario Tennis Aces and Minecraft at retail, on June 22nd and June 21st respectively, should have a noticeable impact on sales.

It’s not clear how much of an impact the announcement of Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! / Eevee had on Nintendo Switch sales, especially so early (pre-orders for the game haven’t even started yet, unlike in Europe and North America). However, there’s no doubt the game will be a strong driver of sales come November!

A quick note about the Nintendo Switch: it’s now sold over 1 million units in 2018 alone. That’s quite earlier than last year: about 3 weeks, to be precise. Of course, the gap with 2017 is only to widen from now on, especially over the Summer holidays.

And if you take into account major releases like Super Smash Bros. and Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! / Eevee!, and the lack of shortages, it’s pretty clear that 2018 sales will end up way above 2017 sales.

Meanwhile, Nintendo 3DS sales once again remained absolutely flat. The handheld is basically on auto-pilot at this point, and there’s really nothing that will have a significant impact on its sales.
