[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 12, 2018 (March 19th – March 25th) – EurePikachu! [Top 50]

Media Create

Week 12 2018 saw the release of quite a few games, with 5 of them making it in the Top 10 from Media Create (7 in the Top 20).

The best-selling new entry on Nintendo platforms is Detective Pikachu, which is off to a pretty decent start with 42 013 units sold. The first part of the game was released a couple of years ago exclusively on the Nintendo eShop, and you can “upgrade” to the full version at a discount, but it looks like a significant amount of players were interested in a physical copy.

It will be interesting to check out how Detective Pikachu sells in the upcoming weeks, since it lacks the elements that make Pokémon game sell on the long run: no multiplayer, no replayability… it’s an adventure game after all!

Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition is also off to a decent start, with 24 908 units sold during the first 4 days. Considering this is the 2nd re-release of the game (after Hyrule Warriors Legends on Nintendo 3DS), though the first one with all content available in HD, this is pretty decent. Unfortunately, it’s unlikely the game will sell on the long run…

Here’s how the previous two versions of the game sold at launch (Famitsu data, via Games Data Library):

Famitsu Hyrule Warriors

The next and final entry this week is PriPara All Idol Perfect Stage!, and it sold only 12 426 units at launch. This is definitely on the low end of sales for the series (in fact, it’s the worst-selling entry so far), but it’s not too surprising given the audience is yet to fully transition to the Nintendo Switch (which remains an expensive console). It will be interesting to see if sales remain steady in the upcoming weeks or months.

Here’s how the previous entries sold at launch (Famitsu data, via Games Data Library):

But none of the new entries sold enough to worry Kirby, with Kirby Star Allies still #1 of sales with 84 625 units sold during the second week. That’s a pretty good drop (-62%), due to a variety of factors: good word of mouth, general interest in the Nintendo Switch, the public holiday on Wednesday, and pay day.

As of this week, Kirby Star Allies has already sold over 300 000 units (306 656 to be precise), and that’s not counting digital sales. Unless the game doesn’t sell in the long run like pretty much all other mainline Kirby games, it’s looking pretty likely that it will sell over 1 million units LTD (maybe even this year).

Splatoon 2 is the only evergreen title on Nintendo Switch to sell less during Week 12, and that’s due to the re-release of the Nintendo Switch bundle during Week 11. Unfortunately, that bundle was pretty limited, and this had an impact on Nintendo Switch and Splatoon sales the following week… Of course, the drop remains pretty limited (only 5%).

Meanwhile, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe saw its sales increase by 12%, thanks to the public holiday on Wednesday and payday. Sales topped 17 288 units this week, bringing the total to 1 432 500 units. It looks like we can safely expect sales to reach 1.5 million units thanks to the Golden Week in late April / early May.

Finally, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild just keeps on selling, with 11 116 additional units this week (+7%). With 929 617 units sold at retail since launch, it’s basically guaranteed to reach 1 million units sometime in May.

Next, let’s take a look at how games in the second half of the Top 20 from Media Create are faring:

  • 11./10. [NSW] Super Mario Odyssey (Nintendo) – 9.523 / 1.667.454 (+5%). Mario’s adventures around the world are still attracting quite a lot of new players every week!
  • 14./04. [NSW] Attack on Titan 2 (Koei Tecmo) – 7.253 / 30.194 (-68%). Better than expected for the second week, with 7 253 units sold. This time, Media Create is reporting sales pretty close to the PlayStation 4 version;
  • 15./12. [3DS] Pokemon Ultra Sun / Ultra Moon (Pokemon Co.) – 7.001 / 1.599.916 (-9%). Sales keep dropping steadily, but remain strong enough for the game to stay in the Top 20 despite the many new releases;
  • 19./21. [NSW] 1-2-Switch (Nintendo) – 4.202 / 419.947. Yup, it’s still selling, whether you like or not!

Hardware-wise, things haven’t changed much this week. Sales did drop slightly for the Nintendo Switch, because it turns out the Splatoon 2 bundle was pretty limited. It’s not gone forever, but it looks like it’s going to be a week or two before new units hit retailers.

With 50 412 units sold this week, the Nintendo Switch is getting closer and closer to the 4 million units milestone: it should reach it next week, unless sales drop significantly (which is highly unlikely: this is the last week for the Fiscal Year, and if anything, Nintendo will try to ship as many units as possible to boost sales).

It looks like we can safely expect sales to remain in the 40-50 000 units range for the next few weeks, at least until Nintendo Labo is released on April 20th. After that, the Golden Week should ensure significantly higher sales (though how high is yet to be seen).

The Nintendo 3DS did see a pretty minor increase in sales: it sold 11 203 units this week (as opposed to 9 148 last week), but nothing to write home about. As expected, the release of Detective Pikachu did not have any impact on sales whatsoever (Pokémon fans already have a Nintendo 3DS, so no surprise here!).
