Super Mario Party: website update (more details), footage for all 80 minigames, trailer, more

Today, Nintendo finally updated the official website for Super Mario Party, providing us with additional details, but also tons of footage. In fact, we now have footage of all 80 regular minigames included in the game… every single one!

Let’s start right away with the minigames. We went and grabbed the video clips for each one of the 80 minigames, and merged them all in one, 16mn long video, for your viewing convenience:

Here’s some more video clips, this time showcasing the Board Game aspect of the game:

Finally, Nintendo of Europe has already uploaded its launch trailer, despite the game not launching for another two weeks!

Now, onto the details, starting with River Survival. It’s a rather unique mode for a Mario Party game, as all players need to cooperate in order to travel down a river and reach the goal within the time limit… this may seem rather hard to get used to, especially for players accustomed to the intense rivalries the series is known for!

This mode is played exclusively with the Joy-Con. As you can imagine, it’s not as straightforward as it sounds: there’s various enemies and obstacles to avoid. But there’s also balloons: if you pop them, you get to play a minigame, and if you clear it, you earn some additional time. Of course, all players also need to cooperate in those minigames!

Super Mario Party also features some rhythm-based mini-games via a separate mode.

And as showcased at E3 2018, Super Mario Party features some minigames where you actually need two Nintendo Switch consoles: that’s Toad’s Rec Room. You put the two screens right next to each other in order to “connect” them, and you play on both at the same time.

There’s 4 minigames that are played that way:

  • Banana, Splot: you have to complete a picture of bananas by putting the two screens right next to each other at the right angle;
  • Mini Baseball League: a miniature version of the famous sport, with each team on their own screen;
  • Shell Shocked Deluxe: the one showcased at E3 2018, where you “connect” the two screens to make one stage;
  • Puzzle Hustle, where the two players have to help each other.

Important note: 3 of the 4 minigames can be played with just one Nintendo Switch, but you need two no matter what for the first one.

Of course, Super Mario Party does feature the traditional board game the series is known for. As you probably already know, this new entry goes back to the series’ roots: no more vehicles or anything; everyone goes around the board on their own.

The goal of the board game hasn’t changed: you have to reach the stars and buy them using coins, wihile playing a variety of minigames. If you end up on a character case, you can get a special dice based on that character: it has some special features, such as higher numbers. But there’s always a catch: they have “penalty sides”, and if you end up getting one, you can lose coins. It’s up to you to decide whether the risks outweight the possible gains or not! The characters you play as also have their own special dice.

When playing in teams in Partner Party, there’s no set “routes” on the board: you have to move from case to case by choosing your own path. You can combine your paths and go further than you would on your own (see the Board Game video above to see how it works). Also, if both characters get the same number with their respective dice, then you get a bonus (some coins and their number is doubled).

If you want to play on your own, there’s Challenge Road: you play various minigames while trying to complete challenges.

Finally, there’s online play. For the first time ever, Super Mario Party lets you play online, though only via a separate mode known as Online Mario-thon. You compete in a set of 5 mini-games played in succession, and the players with the most points at the end wins. There’s online leaderboards to compete in, too!

In case you’re wondering: yes, Super Mario Party is indeed compatible with amiibo, and more precisely all amiibo figures:

  • by tapping one of the amiibo from the Super Mario series (listed below), you can get a sticker of the character scanned, and use it in a special photo mode.
  • by tapping the Toad amiibo or any other amiibo, you get some points to be used in-game.
