SteamWorld Dig 2: development complete, now releasing in Late Summer/Early Fall, possible 3DS version

SteamWorld Dig 2 was originally supposed to come out this Summer, but yesterday, Image & Form announced that it was delayed. Instead of releasing this Summer, it will now come out in Late Summer / Early Autumn. Granted, it’s not the worst of delays, and there’s no doubt it will be more than worth the extra wait in the end.

According to Image & Form, development for SteamWorld Dig 2 is pretty much finished, but the team needs a few more months to polish the game:

When we plan the release for any SteamWorld game, we always want to finish as soon as possible so everyone can play and and have fun with it. But at the same time we want to create something new. It’s hard to estimate how long that’s going to take and at what point whatever we consider to be new is done. More often than not problems take a lot longer to tackle than anticipated. These extra months will take pressure off our team and give us enough time to give you the game you deserve.

But for now, the team is going on (well-deserved) vacation. The final release date will be revealed after that break, alongside the price of course!

Finally, Image & Form confirmed that there would not be a Wii U version of SteamWorld Dig 2. They believe that the Nintendo Switch has firmly replaced it by now, so porting the game to that platform wouldn’t make much sense.

As for the Nintendo 3DS, it looks like Image & Form is indeed working on something…

Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation Vita are still important to us. We won’t talk more about portable versions today, but rest assured we have not forgotten where we came from.

If a Nintendo 3DS version is indeed in the works, there’s no doubt it will be among the last to be released, with Image & Form focusing on the most recent platforms (such as the Nintendo Switch, the first to get the game).

SteamWorld Dig 2 (Switch – eShop) will be released in Late Summer / Early Fall.
