[Japan] Famitsu sales for Week 14, 2019 (April 1st – April 7th) [Top 30]

Here’s the latest sales report from Famitsu (and Media Create), covering Week 14, 2019 in Japan.

Important note: starting with Week 14, 2019, Media Create will only share the Top 10 Software with no sales data, and no Hardware sales data at all. Due to this, we have switched to Famitsu data, with Top 10 Software + Hardware sales on Wednesday at the usual time, and Top 30 Software on Thursday.

It’s not clear how long Famitsu will keep sharing data now that public Media Create data is no more, and whether they will change their schedule for sales data releases. Should there be any change, we will make sure to notify you in one of these posts as soon as possible.

Famitsu

The first week of April is the start of a rather slow period for the video games market in Japan, which is why it’s no wonder the usual evergreen titles on Nintendo Switch have a firm grasp on the Top 10 from Famitsu.

There was one release for Week 14, and it’s the latest entry in the Dragon Ball Heroes series. Super Dragon Ball Heroes: World Mission is off to a great start, with 70 990 units sold during the first week, which is by far the best debut for a Dragon Ball game on Nintendo Switch (not surprising: it’s the first original, non-ported game on the platform!).

This Nintendo Switch entry sold pretty well: its first week sales are pretty much the same as Dragon Ball Heroes 2 (70 832 units at retail), but slightly below Dragon Ball Heroes and Dragon Ball Heroes X (both at 90 000 units sold after the first week).

The first game went on to sell over 300 000 units, and the other two over 220 000 units, and it’s certainly going to be interesting to see whether this Nintendo Switch entry can also top 200 000 units LTD. Its great debut shows that the audience is definitely there on Nintendo Switch, and it’s pretty safe to assume it’s going to keep selling on the long run like the previous games (especially as the console reaches even more kids).

After a somewhat disappointing debut, Yoshi’s Crafted World went on to sell 28 468 units during its second week. Sales only dropped by 43%, which is a pretty good drop for a second week, especially one during a slow sales period like April.

Since word of mouth is seemingly fairly positive, it’s pretty safe to expect the game to keep selling on the long run like the majority of first-party games on Nintendo Switch. The first milestone is 100 000 units, and it will be reached next week! It’s currently sitting at 78 475 units sold since launch.

This week, the sales of pretty much all the games in the Top 10 dropped, with one notable exception: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. It sold 6 309 units, which is 10% more than the previous week. This increase is most definitely due to the Toy-Con VR Goggle announcement, which has led to a sharp increase of pre-orders for Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 04: VR Kit. We’re most likely going to see a similar increase for Super Mario Odyssey when Famitsu share their Top 30 Software.

This week, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate finally reached 3 million units sold at retail alone, with 14 775 units sold this week (-24%). It has now sold 3 007 151 units, and as you can imagine, it’s definitely not done selling… far from it, especially as none of the DLC sets have been released yet!

Next, here’s how the other games in the Top 5 from Famitsu have been faring:

  • 05./05. [NSW] Minecraft (Microsoft Game Studios) – 12.278 / 719.845 (-10%). Sales remain strong and steady;
  • 06./04. [NSW] New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe (Nintendo) – 12.111 / 560.098 (-21%). It should reach the 600 000 units milestone during the Golden Week, at the end of the month;
  • 07./07. [NSW] Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Nintendo) – 9.551 / 2.246.416 (-12%). A dip below the 10 000 units/week threshold this week;
  • 08./10. [NSW] Splatoon 2 (Nintendo) – 8.161 / 3.028.994 (-6%). Sales dropped again after the slighy boost provided by the special demo. They remain at a good level;
  • 10./12. [NSW] Super Mario Party (Nintendo) – 6.305 / 991.550 (-17%). It will reach 1 million units at retail alone within the next couple of weeks.

This week, the Nintendo Switch reached its first million in 2019, and it did so much earlier than last year (as pointed out several times before). To be more precise, the console has now sold over 1 016 073 units, as opposed to 707 729 units last year after the same amount of weeks. No doubt the second million will also come much earlier, especially with the stronger line-up for June and this Summer (Super Mario Maker 2, Fire Emblem: Three Houses, and more).

Sales did drop slightly during Week 14, with 46 850 units sold (about 3 000 units less than during Week 13), but they still remain comfortably ahead of 2018 sales. The console did sell only 36 000 units last year during Week 14, which shows that we can definitely expect the slow sales period in April not to change anything regarding the gap between 2019 and 2018 sales.

The Nintendo Switch has now sold 7 905 619, which means it should reach the 8 million units milestone during Week 17 at the latest. There’s very little doubt it will reach the 10 million units milestone before the end of the year, and the 9 million units milestone before the end of Summer.

Finally, Nintendo 3DS sales dropped to 4 388 units (- 700 units, roughly), a pretty “normal” level for it. They will remain at a low level through April, and not just because it’s a slow period for video game sales in Japan.
