[Japan] Famitsu sales for Week 13, 2019 (March 25th – March 31st) [Top 50]

Here’s the latest sales report from Famitsu (and Media Create), covering Week 13, 2019 in Japan.

Important note: starting with Week 14, 2019, Media Create will only share the Top 10 Software with no sales data, and no Hardware sales data at all. Due to this, we have switched to Famitsu data starting with this week, with Top 10 Software + Hardware sales on Wednesday at the usual time, and Top 30 Software on Thursday.

It’s not clear how long Famitsu will keep sharing data now that public Media Create data is no more, and whether they will change their schedule for sales data releases. Should there be any change, we will make sure to notify you in one of these posts as soon as possible.

Famitsu

The last week of March saw various new releases, but only a couple of them managed to chart in the Top 10 provided by Famitsu. The best-selling game is Yoshi’s Crafted World, which is off to a rather disappointing debut with only 50 007 units sold. That’s the worst debut for a Yoshi game in Japan so far, as even the Nintendo 3DS port of Yoshi’s Woolly World sold slightly more (52 000 units during launch week).

It’s not clear why the game didn’t sell more, but it definitely would not be farfetched to say that Nintendo Switch owners are probably not in the mood for a 2D platform right now. That being said, the game is most likely going to sell well in the long run. At the very least, it should be able to sell over 200 000 units, though it’s going to take a few months for sales to reach that milestone.

The other entry in the Top 10 from Famitsu is Winning Post 9, which didn’t even chart on Nintendo Switch. In other words, the Nintendo Switch version sold less than 8 706 units, since that’s what the game ranked #10 sold. Even with the two versions combined, Winning Post 9 saw the worst debut ever for the series. Not really a good sign for Koei-Tecmo…

The new entries failed to make an impression, but the usual evergreen titles on Nintendo Switch kept enjoying strong sales. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is nearing the 3 million units milestone with 2 992 376 units sold as of this week. Famitsu reports 19 349 units sold for the game this week, which is only 5% less than during Week 12.

As for New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, it was completely unphased by the release of Yoshi’s Crafted World. Its sales are perfectly flat with 15 238 units sold (-1%). It’s now sold 547 987 units since launch, and should reach 600 000 units by the end of the month or in early May at the very latest.

Some of the evergreen titles saw their sales rise this week:

  • 05./10. [NSW] Minecraft (Microsoft Game Studios) – 13.667 / 707.567 (+9%). There really is no stopping Minecraft, is there?
  • 07./13. [NSW] Mario Kart 8 Deluxe <RCE> (Nintendo) {2017.04.28} (¥5.980) – 10.889 / 2.236.865 (+4%). There really is no stopping Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, is there?
  • 10./17. [NSW] Splatoon 2 # <ACT> (Nintendo) {2017.07.21} (¥5.980) – 8.706 / 3.020.833 (+14%). Last week, the Special demo was running in Japan (one week after Europe and North America), and it looks like it had a noticeable impact on sales. Now it remains to be seen whether it will have any lasting impact on them.

Finally, sales dropped slightly for Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! / Let’s Go, Eevee!, with 9 227 units sold (-5%). It’s now sold 1 479 158 units at retail, and it will reach the 1.5 million units milestone within the next couple of weeks. So far in 2019, it’s been able to hold up pretty well, but now that we’re entering a slow period (April, May, and June, with a “break” during the Golden Week), sales are inevitably going to drop. It will certainly be interesting to see how its sales fare during the next few months.

This week, Nintendo Switch sales dropped below the 50 000 units/week threshold for the first time in many weeks. Of course, it’s not quite due to the console itself on its own: the market as a whole was a bit sluggish this week (and it’s not going to improve in the next few weeks, quite the opposite).

Still, despite that drop, sales remain comfortably ahead of 2018 sales with nearly 50 000 units sold: that’s about 9 000 units more than last year during the same week. The gap between the two years is now roughly 300 000 units, and it’s only going to widen moving forward (even if sales drop within the next quarter). And next week, the Nintendo Switch will reach its first million units sold in 2019, and will do so much faster than in 2018.

As for the 8 million units milestone, it should be reached sometime in early May (if not this very month), unless April and Golden Week sales are incredibly poor. Granted, the Software line-up isn’t all that exciting (it already wasn’t in Q1), but despite that, sales should remain somewhat steady (albeit at a lower level than during Q1).

Finally, Nintendo 3DS sales dropped to 5 056 units this week, and it should stay below that threshold until the Golden Week at the end of the month.
