[E3 2016] Shigeru Miyamoto: a “new kind of Mario” coming, E3 2017 reveal?

Super Mario GalaxyThis year, Nintendo revealed The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, a game that complete challenges the many conventions of the Legend of Zelda series. And what if Nintendo did the same with Mario? It certainly looks like that’s the very thing the company is doing, according to Miyamoto.

Here’s what he said in an interview with IGN:

We’re always challenging ourselves to create something new, so hopefully you’ll see a new kind of Mario in about a year or two.

Maybe next E3 we’ll be able to share something.

Shigeru Miyamoto then went on to explain that tweaking the formula for Mario was a tad more complex than with Zelda, since Mario games appeal to a broader audience. And the very conventions of Mario games are “based on the approachability and accessibility of those games”. That being said, it looks like having new people joining Nintendo helped them take a good look “at the conventions with fresh eyes”.

Since Shigeru Miyamoto expects this “new kind of Mario” to be revealed at E3 2017 (at the earliest), it means it will most definitely not be a launch title for the NX platform. However, it’s definitely possible some sort of Mario game will be available at launch (maybe a New Super Mario Bros. title?).
