AI: The Somnium Files – More details and pictures for the Somnium parts

Spike-Chunsoft have shared some more details and pictures for AI: The Somnium Files, once again focusing on the Somnium parts. There isn’t much that was not previously covered in this report, unfortunately…

As mentioned several times previously, you play as one Kaname Date, a detective from a special department of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department (known as ABIS). You have to investigate in order to find a serial-killer carrying their misdeeds in Tokyo. Investigation is carried out in two parts: the Investigation Parts (in the real world), and the Somnium Parts.

During the Somnium Parts, you literally go into the world of dreams, and more precisely the dreams of key characters. It’s the only way for you find the necessary clues to find the truth. But in order to investigate in dreams, you have to use a mysterious machine known as PSYNC.

When in the world of dreams, you control not Kaname Date, but a mysterious girl known as AI-Ball… Kaname’s very own artificial eye. But the thing is, you can only stay in that world for 6 minutes, which means you have to find the clues within that time limit. Of course, it’s going to be easier said than done, especially as you have to clear various obstacles known as “Mental Locks” to find all the clues.

Those Mental Locks prevent you from accessing certain parts of the mind / memories of the person whose dreams you’re exploring. To get rid of them, you have to carefully examine things, then solve mysteries by making certain choices. Be careful, though: every action you take uses up some of your precious time, which means you can’t fool around if you want to get rid of the Mental Locks in time.

As mentioned previously, AI: The Somnium Files features a branching story line, with several routes. Depending on what you do during the Somnium parts (whether you’re successful in getting rid of all the Mental Locks, for example), the story will change and you will end up on a specific route. However, it’s not clear if only actions in the Somnium parts have an impact, or if those in the real world also do.

Of course, in order to get to the very bottom of things, and reach the true ending, you will have to see each route to its conclusion.

Finally, a quick note about the world of dreams: as mentioned previously, that world reflects the mind of each character, which is why each dream world looks radically different from the others, with its own colour scheme and unique scenery.

Finally, here’s the latest set of screenshots for AI: The Somnium Files:
