[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 38, 2017 (September 18th – September 24th) [Top 50]

This week has several entries in the Top 20 from Media Create, and two of them are on Nintendo Switch. The first one is Pokkén Tournament DX, which sold 53 395 units during its first 3 days: a pretty satisfying result, considering the original sold 69 675 units during the first 4 days on Wii U, last year.

Now, it remains to be seen whether Pokkén Tournament DX will sell on the long run. It’s on a much healthier platform than Pokkén Tournament was, but the lack of new content certainly limits its appeal among players who already bought it on Wii U. At the very least, it should be able to clear 100 000 units.

The second entry of the week is Dragon Quest X: All in One Package, which sold 9 482 units during the first four days on the market. Considering there’s a free upgrade program for Wii users, and the userbase on Nintendo Switch is still pretty limited, this is an ok debut (nothing mindblowing, but still respectable numbers).

This week again, Splatoon 2 sales dropped significantly, with “only” 21 897 units sold (-42%). But as explained last week, this isn’t really due to a drop in interest, it’s actually because Nintendo has discontinued the Splatoon 2 bundle (for now, at least).

Before, the majority of Nintendo Switch sold each week came from that very bundle, but it’s no longer the case. And since it’s what was “supporting” Splatoon 2 sales, a drop was inevitable now that the bundle has become much harder to find in stores. Sales are going to go back up again with public holidays and increases in Nintendo Switch shipments.

Meanwhile, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is enjoying steady sales: +4% this week, with 11 457 units sold (and over 705 642 units since launch!). It looks like this game is benefitting from the fact the most common Nintendo Switch bundle doesn’t already include a game, though it already was one of the must-haves. At this rate, 1 million units before the end of the year sounds like a real possibility for this game!

Finally, we have Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age at #10, with 7 482 units sold (-29%). Sales keep dropping every week, but they remain strong enough for the game to stay in the Top 10 (though this is probably going to be its last week there). Over 1 727 913 units have been sold since launch.

Now, let’s take a look at games in the second half of the Top 20:

• 12./10. [NSW] Monster Hunter Double Cross: Nintendo Switch Ver. (Capcom) – 6.911 / 140.533 (-27%). Sales remain decent, but not all that impressive for now. It should reach 150 000 units sold in early October;
• 13./03. [3DS] Metroid: Samus Returns (Nintendo) – 6.206 / 37.061 (-80%). As expected, the drop for the second week is harsh, but not bad enough to completely drop from the Top 20;
• 14./12. [3DS] The Snack World: TreJarers (Level 5) – 5.952 / 167.759 (-11%). Sales are pretty steady, which is a good sign. Now to see how this one will fare during the holiday period, in a couple of months!
• 15./14. [NSW] The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Nintendo) – 5.502 / 591.055 (+10%). Just like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, this one seems to be benefitting from the discontinuation of the Splatoon 2 bundle. It will top 600 000 units early next month.

This week again, Nintendo Switch shipments were pretty stable, with 43 426 units sold. It’s pretty clear that Nintendo didn’t ship more consoles for the launch of Pokkén Tournament DX, and it doesn’t look like they will until Super Mario Odyssey is released (on October 27th). There most likely will not be an increase for Fire Emblem Warriors either (game is out tomorrow in Japan).

It certainly looks like the Nintendo Switch is going to hover around 40-45 000 units sold during the next few weeks, which is quite better than what it sold in May and June. Another good news is that, unlike what we expected, the discontinuation of the Splatoon 2 bunble didn’t lead to a drop in sales: Nintendo simply shifted their attention to the Neon Red/Blue and Grey bundles.

Naturally, the Nintendo Switch is still sold out nationwide, despite the increase in weekly shipments.

Meanwhile, the Nintendo 3DS saw another minor drop this week, to 19 272 units sold. Nothing really surprising given the lack of releases (let alone notable ones), and the age of the platform. Compared to the same week last year, sales are down by a wide margin (about 12 000 units), but 2017 sales are ahead of 2016 sales… for now.

As expected, it’s sales during the holiday period that will determine whether the Nintendo 3DS is going to be up Year on Year or not.

Finally, the Wii U sold 56 units this week.

Famitsu

Unlike Media Create, Famitsu actually tracks the retail release of Pokémon Gold and Silver, allowing us to see how the game is faring. During the first three days, it sold 56 013 units, which is a fairly good result. Unfortunately, Famitsu doesn’t officially track digital sales (nobody does, actually), so that number doesn’t include sales from the Nintendo eShop itself: we will have to wait for Nintendo’s official data for the whole picture!

In comparison, Pokémon Red Version / Green Version / Blue Version / Yellow Version: Special Pikachu Edition sold 69 234 units at retail during launch week, last year. In short, Pokémon Gold and Silver sold pretty well, especially as it’s only two versions this time around (as opposed to 4).
