Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker – Demo now available in Japan (w. English), more details (inc. amiibo) and footage

Today, Nintendo updated the official website for Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker in Japan. It now features two new sections: Courses (stages) and amiibo. The first one reminds us that the game offers over 70 courses: that’s a lot of content to go through, especially with the addition of the courses based on Super Mario Odyssey.

Here’s a collection of video clips showcasing 10 of the courses included in the game (+ one showcasing the 8-Bit Toad you can find in each level):

As you progress through the game, you will unlock a series of Super Mario Odyssey-themed levels, based on that game. They’re basically miniature version of New Donk City, Fossil Falls, Tostarena, and Mount Volbono.

Here’s some footage for those levels:

A quick note about those levels: they actually replace the Super Mario 3D World levels from the Wii U version of the game (which are exclusive to it). They were part of the “Expedition to the Sprixie Kingdom” episode, which consisted of the following levels:

  • Super Bell Hill
  • Conkdor Canyon
  • Shadow-Play Alley
  • Clear Pipe Cruise

Those levels were pretty much the same as their counterpart in Super Mario 3D World (with minor differences), and required save data from that game to be unlocked in Super Mario 3D World. It’s not clear why Nintendo decided not to include them in the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo 3DS versions of the game.

As for the amiibo section, it details how amiibo are used in this game. There’s two three things you can do:

  • Peach (Wedding), Mario (Wedding), Bowser (Wedding): unlock the Super Mario Odyssey courses right away. Those can be unlocked without the amiibo, but you will have to progress through the game first;
  • Toad: gives you an Invincibility Mushroom;
  • all other amiibo: give you a 1-Up Mushroom.

But that’s not all: Nintendo also shared the usual overview trailer for the game!

And there’s still more! Starting today, a demo for Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is available for download on the Nintendo eShop in Japan. Unlike the Sushi Striker: The Way of Sushido demo, it’s available for both the Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo 3DS.

It’s not yet available in Europe and north America (it most likely will be this Thursday, at the usual Nintendo eShop update time), but if you do have a Japanese Nintendo Account, you can still download the demo on Nintendo Switch: it does feature an English (and other languages) option. In fact, it’s pretty much guaranteed to be the exact same demo worldwide!

The demo lets you play through 3 levels:

  • 1) Plucky Pass Beginnings
  • 2) Mushroom Mesa
  • 3 The King of Pyropuff Peak

Finally, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is now available for pre-purchase in Japan (it most likely will be later this week in Europe and North America). It costs 4 298 Yen, and requires only 1.4GB of free space.

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker (Switch, 3DS) comes out on July 13th worldwide.
