Pokémon Sun and Moon: Legendaries showcased, new characters introduced, more

Pokemon Sun and MoonLast month, we got our very first look at Pokémon Sun and Moon thanks to a trailer, which introduced the three starters and the two Legendaries. Did you think we would have to wait until June 15th for the next batch of details, from CoroCoro magazine? The answer is… no! As announced last week, some new details were to be revealed today, on June 2nd.

A brand new trailer was uploaded, and its showcases the two Legendaries:

Head after the break for even more details, artworks, screenshots, and videos!

Solgaleo (Pokémon Sun)

  • Type: Psychic / Steel
  • Ability: Full Metal Body (prevents the opponent from lowering your stats with their own abilities)
  • Moves: Sunsteel strike

Since ancient times, Solgaleo has been honored as an emissary of the sun. It is referred to with reverence as “the beast that devours the sun.” Solgaleo’s body holds a vast amount of energy, and it shines with light when it’s active. It has a flowing mane with a remarkable resemblance to the sun. Its signature move is Sunsteel Strike, an attack that charges at an opponent with the force of a meteor, disregarding the target’s Ability.

Solgaleo’s Ability is Full Metal Body, a new Ability that no previous Pokémon has had. With the Full Metal Body Ability, a Pokémon’s stats will not be lowered by the effects of an opponent’s moves or Ability.

Lunala (Pokémon Moon)

  • Type: Psychic / Ghost
  • Ability: Shadow Shield
  • Move: Moongeist Beam

Since ancient times, Lunala has been honored as an emissary of the moon. It is referred to with reverence as “the beast that calls the moon.” Lunala is constantly absorbing light and converting it into energy. With its wings spread to absorb the surrounding light and glittering like a crescent moon, it resembles a beautiful night sky. Lunala’s signature Moongeist Beam attack releases an ominous beam of light that disregards the target’s Ability.

Lunala’s Ability is Shadow Shield, a new Ability that no previous Pokémon has had. With the Shadow Shield Ability, a Pokémon will take less damage from an attack that lands when the Pokémon has full HP.

Alola region

The trailer below confirms that the game takes place in the Alola region, where several tropical islands (and one artificial island) can be found. Naturally, plenty of brand new Pokémon live on those islands, who are only waiting for hopeful trainers to explore them!

There’s also plenty of characters to meet in this new regions, including:

  • Kukui: the new Professor. He lives near your house (as usual!), and is so passionate about his Pokémon research that he has taken direct hits from Pokémon when there was something to be learned from it. He has a unique fashion style, wearing his lab coat over his bare torso;

  • Lillie: the mysterious assistant of the Professor. She’s about the same age as you, and works as the Professor’s assistant for personal reasons. She loves reading, but hates Pokémon battles. The official website explains that she will get to play a major role in the story.

  • Hau: a new friend you meet when arriving in the Alola region. He loves eating, and has a real weakness for malasada (a famous treat in the Alola region): he likes it so much he’s always in search of malasada shops. He’s described as a big-hearted young boy who loves Pokémon. Just like Lillie, he’s about the same age as you.

Just like in previous entries, you will be able to chose between a male or female character. Good news: the customisation options from Pokémon X and Y are back, including the various skin colours!

QR Scanner and Rotom Pokédex

One of the new features of Pokémon Sun and Moon is the QR Scanner, which allows you to see information about Pokémon when you scan QR Codes. If you do so, you can register a Pokémon in your Pokédex, and then find out where they live: this should make searching for particular Pokémon easier, at least for those who don’t rely on online guides!

What’s more, you can display the QR Code of Pokémon you’ve already caught, and then show it to a friend so they can scan it and add the Pokémon to their Pokédex.

Pokémon Sun and Moon will feature a brand new type of Pokédex, which is a bit special. It’s called the Rotom Pokédex, and it’s inhabited by a Rotom (which has the power to reside in various electronic appliances). As a result, the Pokédex has a personality of its own, and does more than simply give details about the Pokémon.

The Rotom Pokémon also shows your current location along with your next destination. What’s more, it gives you advice on where to go next, based on the conversations you have with others. It’s an extremely rare device, that very few people own.

We also have the confirmation that the Pokédex will be divided in regions (just like in Pokémon X and Y):

  • Alola (global)
  • MeleMele (the first island)

Pokémon Sun and Moon (3DS) comes out on November 18th in Japan and North America, and November 23rd in Europe.
