NPD: sales for May 2015 (United States), Splatoon and amiibo sales

Software

During May, total Hardware + Software + Accessories sales (physical-only) generated $507.6 million in the United States: that’s 13% less than May last year, when they generated $584.9 million.

According to the NPD, “catalog games” (games that didn’t come out in May) sold more in May 2015 (+1%) compared to the same month in 2014. Software sales for the new generation increased by 8 percent in May 2015, and represents 54% of total Software sales. Total Software sales are actually down year on year: they generated $204.7 million in May 2015, vs $273.9 million in May 2014 (a drop of 25%).

One of the main reasons for this drop is the high profiles releases from May 2014: Watch Dogs, Mario Kart 8, and Wolfenstein: The New Order, which were real tough competition for May 2015’s titles.

Splatoon 1

Splatoon is one of the games that came out last month in the United States, and it’s off to a great start. With only just 3 days tracked, it managed to reach #5 (behind several popular multiplatform titles), which is definitely great news for Nintendo. Since the game came out at the end of the month, it’s most likely going to remain in the Top 10 in June.

According to inside-sources, Splatoon sold a total of 136 000 units during the first 3 days in the United States.

Hardware

In May, Hardware sales generated a total of $153.6 million in the United States, which is a drop of 18% compared to the same month in 2014 (where they generated $186.4 million). That being said, current-gen consoles did pretty well, with only a slight decrease (-1%) compared to the same month in 2014. Same for handhelds, with a 41% increase… quite the contrast with the 45% decrease for last-gen consoles.

Finally, some deta about amiibo: for the first time since launch, they generated more money than the competition (most likely due to the Splatoon amiibo). The toys to life segment experienced “stellar growth”, with +73% in May 2015.
