[Japan] Pokémon Sun and Moon sold over 1.9 million units during launch week-end, 3DS Sales

Update: Famitsu has updated its early sale report, and reveal that the release of Pokémon Sun and Moon had a strong impact on Nintendo 3DS sales. According to that update, the Nintendo 3DS sold 113 987 units last week (all models combined), which is almost 4 times more than during the previous week (29 981 units).

That’s a much stronger boost than we were expecting, which bodes pretty well for the holiday period. Unfortunately, Famitsu doesn’t provide data for individual model, but it wouldn’t be surprising if the Nintendo 2DS enjoyed the strongest boost of all Nintendo 3DS models.

Last week, Famitsu provided us with an early sales report for the Nintendo Classic Mini: Family Computer. We sometime get those reports for major games (that generally sell over 1 million units), or significant hardware launches. And it turns out we are getting one for Pokémon Sun and Moon, released last week in Japan (and North America), once again from Famitsu.

According to Famitsu, Pokémon Sun and Moon sold over 1.9 million units during its launch week-end (November 18th, 19th, and 20th): 1 905 107 units to be more precise. That’s a great debut, but slightly below Pokémon X and Y which opened at 2 096 000 units back in 2013.

Famitsu specifies that this number includes all retail copies (including the double-pack, visibly counted as one unit), download cards, but not digital sales. Another thing to note is that Pokémon Sun and Moon came out on Friday, as opposed to Saturday for Pokémon X and Y, which means that the latest mainline entry in the Pokémon series did slightly worse than initial sales indicate.

Later this week, we will get sales data from Media Create and Dengeki, allowing us to get a better picture of launch sales for Pokémon Sun and Moon (especially for each version), including the impact on Nintendo 3DS sales.

It will be pretty interesting to see how Pokémon Sun and Moon will sell in the upcoming weeks, as the holiday period is just around the corner!
