Japan: more sales data for Week 9 2018, Switch, Dragon Quest Builders, Fiscal Year, more (Media Create, Dengeki)

Media Create (Week 9)

Last week, Media Create published their weekly report on video game sales in Japan during Week 9, 2018. It reveals that total Software sales topped 356 000 units, which is 81.49% of Week 8 sales. Dragon Quest Builders was released on Nintendo Switch, and sold about 28 000 units, which just happens to be about the same as Dragon Quest I and II for Nintendo Switch released (almost) one year ago (about 26 000 units).

As for Hardware, sales were basically flat with 90 000 units sold (about 98.66% of Week 8 sales). Media Create points out that it was the Nintendo Switch’s 53rd week on the market. It sold about 45 000 units, bringing the total for the first year to 3 800 000 units.

Here’s how it compares to previous Nintendo home consoles during the same period:

  • Wii U: 1 219 000 units
  • Wii: 3 871 000

As you can see, the Nintendo Switch handily beat the Wii U (which really isn’t an achievement!), and came pretty close to the first year sales of the Wii. The Wii went to sell over 3 million units during its second year, and it’s pretty likely the Nintendo Switch will do the same. Media Create points out that the key for this second year will be how many new users Nintendo will be able to attract with titles like Nintendo Labo.

Dengeki (Week 9, Fiscal Year)

Dengeki report that Dragon Quest Builders on Nintendo Switch sold 27 000 units at launch, with a rather low sell-through ratio: 55%. This is nowhere near the sales of the initial release on PlayStation consoles (PS4: 140 000 units at launch, 220 000 units LTD / PS3: 50 000 units at launch, 110 000 units LTD / PSV: 180 000 units at launch, 310 000 units LTD). As for Doraemon Nobita no Takarajima, it sold about 5 000 units.

Dengeki point out that despite the new releases, the Top 50 was dominated by previously released games, because the new ones all had low sales.

Next, we have data about the current Fiscal Year, as of March (March 27th 2017 to February 25th 2018 to be precise):

  • Hardware: 6 750 000 units (+47.6%) / 188.8 billion Yen (+66.8%)
  • Software: ??? units (+3.8%) / 188.9 billion Yen (+10.6%)
  • Overall: 377 billion Yen (+33%)

Dengeki point out that Hardware sales have grown every month for 12 consecutive months, ever since the release of the Nintendo Switch in March 2017.

Software wise, there were months when sales increased, and others where they fell behind the previous Fiscal Year. July with the release of Splatoon 2 and Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age, and January with the release of Monster Hunter World, both saw a significant increase in sales. Thanks to that, total Software sales for the Fiscal Year are slightly up Year on Year.

The market as a whole has been growing steadily for the 8th consecutive month (since July), and Dengeki expect that trend to continue as we head into the new Fiscal Year.
