Japan: more sales data for Week 10 2018 (Media Create, Dengeki)

Media Create (Week 10)

Today, Media Create published their weekly report on video game sales in Japan during Week 10, 2018. It reveals that total Software sales topped 429 000 units, which is 120.62% of Week 9 sales: an increase due to one of the new releases selling more than 100 000 units at launch. Hardware sales remained perfectly flat, with 89 000 units sold (99.53% of Week 9 sales).

Media Create (Day-1 sell-through)

This week, we have Day 1 sell-through data for a couple of a Nintendo Switch games and one Nintendo 3DS title:

  • [PS4] [NSW] [PSV] Attack on Titan 2 (Koei Tecmo) – 40%. All versions seem to be pretty close from one another, sales-wise. Week end sales should determine the “winner”. Rather “ok” debut, that should lead to (+)60% sell-through for the first week, as word of mouth seems rather positive;
  • [PS4] [PSV] [NSW] Winning Post 8 2018 (Koei Tecmo) – 40%. Noticeable difference in sales between the various versions;
  • [3DS] Future Card Buddy Fight: Tanjou! Oretachi no Saikyou Body! (FuRyu) (¥5.980) – 20%. Average debut for a licenced game from FuRyu.

Dengeki (Week 10)

Dengeki report that Anata no Shikihime Kyouikutan (which didn’t even chart in the Top 20 from Media Create) sold 3 415 units at launch, which is more or less the same as the PlayStation 4 version (about 3 446 units), and more than the PlayStation Vita version (2 295 units).

Meanwhile, Nintendo Switch evergreen titles just keep selling at a steady space, such as Splatoon 2 with 21 000 units sold this week (2 161 000 units since launch), and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe with 14 000 units sold this week (1 435 000 units LTD).

Dengeki point out that up until the release of a certain Monster Hunter World, Software sales were centered around Nintendo platforms, and more precisely the Nintendo Swich. Here’s Software market shares before and after the release of that game:

Before

  • Nintendo Switch: 39.47%
  • Nintendo 3DS: 33.9%
  • PlayStation 4: 22.1%

After

  • PlayStatation 4: 67.8%
  • Nintendo Switch: 19.9%
  • Nintendo 3DS: 8.2%

The fact that the Nintendo Switch had a relatively poor Q1 line-up only exacerbated the loss in market share for Nintendo platforms.

Regarding the Nintendo 3DS, Dengeki rightly point out that it’s now in its 8th year on the market, and it’s unlikely to see a major increase in sales this year. In other words, the big “battle” will be between the Nintendo Switch and the PlayStation 4.

Next, here’s Software sales for each platform:
