Japan: more sales data for Week 40 2017, Super Famicom Mini, Mario & Luigi (Media Create, Dengeki)

Week 40 (Media Create)

Today, Media Create published their weekly report on video game sales in Japan during Week 40, 2017. It reveals that total Software sales topped 324 000 units, which is only 60.89% of Week 39 sales. Hardware sales are also down, with 88 000 units sold: that’s only 69.10% of Week 39 sales. The drop is due to all the new releases selling relatively small amounts.

Media Create do not directly mention it, but Hardware-wise, the drop is mostly due to the lower Nintendo Switch shipments. And when the console that has been driving the entire market for several months now is down, the whole market itself is down.

Regarding the Nintendo Classic Mini: Super Famicom, Media Create report that it sold about 340 000 units during its opening week (slightly less than what Famitsu reported, earlier this week). In comparison, the Nintendo Classic Mini: Family Computer sold about 261 000 during its first week, in 2016, which means the Super Famicom Mini sold about 80 000 units more than its predecessor.

As expected, the increase in sales is mostly due to bigger shipments, as both consoles completely sold out at launch, making it hard to gauge interest for each console. Media Create do mention that Nintendo has promised continued shipments throughout the rest of the year (and beyond, in 2018), so they’re expected a signifnicant increase in sales over the holiday period.

Day-1 sell-through (Media Create)

Here’s the Day-1 sell-through for one Nintendo Switch game:

  •  [PS4] [NSW] Lost Sphear <RPG> (Square Enix) (¥5.800) – 10-20%. Pretty slow debut, which doesn’t really bode well for the game…

Week 40 (Dengeki)

Dengeki report that Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser’s Minions sold about 27 000 units during its opening week, with a pretty low sell-through ratio: 45%. Compared to the previous mainline games, that’s a pretty sluggish start. Most other games in the series ended up selling over 400 000 units, so they’re waiting to see how this one is going to sell in the upcoming weeks and months.

Regarding the Nintendo Classic Mini: Super Famicom, Dengeki report 371 000 units (closer to Famitsu’s data than Media Create’s), with a pretty high sell-through ratio: 90%. Basically, the console sold out at launch, and quickly became extremely hard to find in stores.

Next, we have some more data about the first half of the current Fiscal Year (April to September), with 159.9 billion Yen in sales (+359%). That strong performance is due (in part) to the strong sales of Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age and Splatoon 2, but also the release of the Nintendo Switch back in March.

Here’s the market share for each platform (Software + Hardware):

  1. PlayStation 4: 35.3% (down from 40.2%)
  2. Nintendo Switch: 34.5% (55.2 billion Yen)
  3. Nintendo 3DS: 24.6% (down from 30.7%)
  4. PlayStation Vita: 4.3% (down from 14.3%)

Next, the market share for home consoles and handhelds:

  • Fiscal Year 2016 – Handhelds: 45.5% / Home consoles: 55.5%
  • Fiscal Year 2017 – Handhelds: 28.8% / Home consoles: 72.2%

Finally, the market share for Nintendo platforms and Sony platforms:

  • Fiscal Year 2016 – Nintendo: 38.8% / Sony: 61%
  • Fiscal Year 2017 – Nintendo: 59.8% / Sony: 40.1%

As you can see, that’s a rather impressive turnaround for Nintendo this Fiscal Year, and that’s without the holiday period, which is its strongest one.

A quick note about the data above: it’s based on sales by revenue (not units), so home consoles have an advantage since they’re not only more expensive than handhelds, their games also cost (sometimes a lot) more than their handheld counterparts.
