[Japan] Famitsu sales for Week 8, 2020 (February 17 – February 23) [Top 30]

Here’s the latest sales report from Famitsu (and Media Create), covering Week 8, 2020 in Japan.

Famitsu

Week 8 saw the releases of some new games, bringing some fresh blood to the Top 10 Software from Famitsu. The biggest release is quite obviously Persona 5 Scramble: The Phantom Strikers, which is off to a great start with 161 000 units sold during launch week. The Nintendo Switch version sold 46 415 units, which is a really solid performance especially as sell-through is pretty high (70% for the first day alone, indicating SEGA and retailers understimated demand).

It’s hardly a surprise that the game sold more on PlayStation 4, given the mainline Persona series has never set foot on a Nintendo platform before. What’s more, Persona 5 Scramble: The Phantom Strikers is a direct sequel to Persona 5, which is not available on Nintendo Switch, limiting its sales potential.

While there’s no data to back it up (yet), it certainly would not be farfetched to assume most players who bought the game on Nintendo Switch already own a PlayStation 4, but wanted to be able to play the game on a handheld device.

In comparison, Persona 5 (original release) and Persona 5 Royal (enhanced re-released) sold over 340 000 units and 201 000 units at launch respectively; therefore, Persona 5 Scramble: The Phantom Strikers had a rather solid debut for a spin-off. Of course, the next few weeks will be key, as sales for this kind of game and series are rather frontloaded with the majority of them concentrated on the first two weeks.

The other entry of the week is Katana Kami: A Way of the Samurai Story, which is off to an okay-ish debut with 18 000 units sold at launch (by far the worst debut for the series, but this is a spin-off, and the latest entry was nearly 9 years ago). The Nintendo Switch version sold 7 392 units, and the gap with the PlayStation 4 version is nowhere near as big as it was for Persona 5 Scramble: The Phantom Strikers (even if this is the first time a Way of the Samurai game is released on a Nintendo platform).

Unfortunately, both games are unlikely to sell well in the long run (though Persona 5 Scramble: The Phantom Strikers should fare better). In fact, Katana Kami: A Way of the Samurai Story is most likely going to drop out of the Top 10 as early as next week.

Sadly, there’s nothing much to say about the Top 10 this week. Sales are down for all games, though some fared better than others. Hatsune Miku: Project Diva Mega 39’s saw a big drop (-84%) due to shortages. Speaking of shortages, Ring Fit Adventure is still impacted, but it looks like Nintendo is providing a steady supply of new copies to retailers (though it’s obviously nowhere near enough to meet demand).

Famitsu – Hardware

This week, Nintendo Switch sales dropped sharply (-50%), for several reasons:

  • shortages are only getting worse, with the OG model only selling 10 850 units this week (and the Lite model, only 30 640 units);
  • Nintendo pacing themselves with Nintendo Switch Lite shipments, in order to save units for the major week ahead (Week 12 with Animal Crossing: New Horizons);
  • pre-orders finally started for the Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and so a significant number of people pre-ordered it instead of buying a Nintendo Switch Lite now
  • pre-orders also started for a new Nintendo Switch Lite colour (Coral), also releasing on March 20th.

Unfortunately, it’s highly unlikely sales are going to increase significantly in the weeks ahead, not until Animal Crossing: New Horizons is launched. However, it remains to be seen how low sales will go; this will entirely depend on how many Nintendo Switch Lite units Nintendo want to save for the big week.

The Nintendo Switch sold 41 490 units this week (vs. 80 312 units last week), which is worse than last year during the same week (49 139 units). It’s the first time this year that sales are down Year on Year, which is something that was unavoidable given the mess caused by the Coronavirus.

YTD sales now stand at 863 258 units, with the gap between 2020 and 2019 dropping below 200 000 units. Unfortunately, the gap is only going to become smaller and smaller in the next few weeks. LTD sales now stand at 12 246 689 units.
