[Japan] Famitsu sales for Week 6, 2020 (February 03 – February 09) [Top 30]

Here’s the latest sales report from Famitsu (and Media Create), covering Week 6, 2020 in Japan.

Famitsu

Week 6 was another quiet week for the Japanese market, especially on Nintendo Switch with no new releases. The usual evergreen titles are still there, and their sales remain stable. Only one game saw an increase in sales this week: Super Mario Party, with 6 132 units sold (+6%). LTD sales now stand at 1 336 277.

Despite Nintendo Switch sales increasing once again this week, the impact on Software sales is somewhat limited. The reason for that is quite simple: it’s called Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Pre-orders for the game kicked off on Saturday, and it’s clear a fair amount of people went and bought their console at the same time despite the game not launching for another month, what with Nintendo warning of upcoming shortages due to the Coronavirus.

Notable milestones this week:

  • Ring Fit Adventure has now sold over 675 000 units (675 906 units to be precise) since launch. Unfortunately, expected shortages are going to really slow down sales in the upcoming weeks;
  • Pokémon Sword and Shield has sold over 3.4 million units since launch (3 402 851 units to be precise).

This week, Nintendo Switch sales increased some more, and went back above the 100 000 units/milestone for the first time since the end of the holiday season. This time, the increase isn’t exclusively due to the anticipation for Animal Crossing: New Horizons; Nintendo warning of upcoming shortages due to the Coronavirus also “helped” with a significant amount of people buying the console early.

Unfortunately, that increase is only temporary: starting as early as next week (Week 7), sales are bound to drop. We can safely expect two things to happen:

  • Nintendo Switch Lite sales to increase significantly. Shortages are expected to have a lesser impact on the Lite model due to sufficient stock. As a result, a fair amount of people are going to opt for a Lite model instead of the OG one, since the latter is going to become increasingly difficult to find in stores. However, the Lite model will not be able to avoid shortages for long, especially if a lot of people end up buying one instead of simply waiting for the OG model to be back in stores;
  • overall Nintendo Switch sales to drop in the next few weeks.

It’s not clear how long shortages will last, as it depends on when production will resume at the factories in China. That being said, it’s clear that it won’t be just a couple of weeks: shortages are expected to last.

This week, the Nintendo Switch sold 100 961 units, which is 25 000 units more than last week (75 922 units). That’s nearly 40 000 units more than last year (61 042 units), which is a pretty solid performance, especially with how lackluster the Software line-up has been this month. Nintendo Switch Lite sales were flat (21 609 units), and the increase is exclusively due to the OG model (79 352 units sold this week, +25 000 units).

The gap between 2020 and 2019 sales is bigger than ever: nearly 200 000 units (741 456 units vs. 559 552 units). Unfortunately, shortages are inevitably going to eat into this lead, and will delay the 1 million units milestone in 2020 by a few weeks (if not months).

LTD sales now stand at 12 124 887 units.

As for the Nintendo 3DS, it only sold 580 units (vs. 599 units last week, and 3 972 units during Week 6 2019). YTD sales now stand at 7 636 units (vs. 52 161 units in 2019). LTD sales now stand at 24 503 950 units.
