Japan: more data for Week 29, 2016, Yo-kai Watch 3’s second week

Media Create

Today, Media Create released its weekly report for video game sales in Japan, providing us with more sales data for Week 29. During that week, a total of 452 000 units were sold for Software, which is 52.55% of Week 28 sales. This drop is quite obviously due to the release of Yo-kai Watch 3: Sushi / Tempura during Week 28, which really boosted sales.

According to Media Create, Yo-kai Watch 3 sold 169 000 units during its second week on the market, with:

  • 85 000 units for the Sushi version
  • 83 000 units for the Tempura version

Since launch, Yo-kai Watch 3: Sushi / Tempura has sold about 801 000 units, which means that all units shipped for Day 1 still haven’t been sold. But more surprisingly, Media Create reports that there were some additional shipments last week, despite the first one not being sold out yet.

Therefore, the total amount of units left unsold is estimated to be around 500 000 units, and some retailers have been talking about the important number of unsold copies in stores. There’s no doubt everything will be sold in the end, even without any price cuts, but it’s certainly surprising to see Yo-kai Watch 3 overshipped (especially when its predecessor was actually pretty hard to find in stores following its launch).

Media Create compares Yo-kai Watch 3 with Yo-kai Watch Busters, which sold about 915 000 units after two weeks, and reached 1 million units during the third one. The latest mainline entry is clearly lagging behind this spin-off, which should reach 1 million units sold before Obon (on August 15th).

According to Dengeki Online, the two versions of Yo-kai Watch 3 have sold:

  • Sushi: 397 356 units since launch
  • Tempura: 377 622 units since launch

The Sushi version remains the most popular, but unlike Yo-kai Watch Busters, the difference between the two versions really isn’t all that significant.
