[Japan, Taiwan, S. Korea] Famitsu and Media Create sales for Week 38, 2020 (September 14 – September 20) [Top 30]

Here’s the latest sales reports from Famitsu and Media Create, with Hardware and Software sales for Week 38, 2020 in Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea!

Famitsu (Week 38)

Week 38 saw the release of quite a few games, and the biggest one was undoubtedly Super Mario 3D All-Stars with over 200 000 units sold (210 136 units to be precise). The sell-through is a bit on the low side (46%), but it just shows that Nintendo were prepared and shipped enough copies to retailers (who will have to place orders for additional copies within the next couple of weeks).

In comparison, Super Mario All-Stars sold about 300 000 units at launch on the Wii. It may seem that Super Mario 3D All-Stars had a lower debut, but there’s also digital sales to take into account. And said digital sales are anything but low: the game topped the Nintendo eShop charts last week, based on pre-orders alone. There’s no doubt it will be #1 this week again.

Unfortunately, Bandai-Namco made a major miscalculation with Pro Yakyuu Famista 2020. It’s pretty clear that releasing so close to Jikkyou Powerful Pro Yakyuu 2020 (by far the most popular baseball series) was anything but a good idea: this new entry only sold 15 129 units at launch, which is the worst debut for the series since Pro Yakyuu Famista Wii back in 2008 (about 8 000 units at launch).

In comparison, Pro Yakyuu Famista Evolution sold 36 550 units at launch. That was when the Jiykkou Powerful Pro Yakyuu series was still nowhere to be seen on Nintendo Switch (first entry came out in June 2019).

Finally, Azur Lane: Crosswave sold 7 413 units at launch, which is a fairly OK performance for a late port. In comparison, the PlayStation 4 version sold about 33 000 units at launch, about a year ago. Unfortunately, sales are bound to be pretty fairloaded, and so a big drop is expected for its second week on the market.

Highlights this week include:

  • 02./01. [NSW] Ring Fit Adventure (Nintendo) – 48.826 / 1.576.270 (+12%). It’s now sold over 1.5 million units since launch (actually, that milestone was reached last week), and it’s absolutely not done selling. 2 million units is the next milestone.

As usual, the evergreen titles on Nintendo Switch performed pretty well, though Super Smash Bros. Ultimate did see a minor drop in sales this week.

Famitsu – Hardware

The Nintendo Switch saw a noticeable increase in sales this week, with 110 029 units sold (up from 83 920 units sold during Week 37). One might be tempted to think that Super Mario 3D All-Stars (or maybe the recently announced Monster Hunter Rise) is responsible for that increase, but the truth is… we have no way to know, because the console is still completely sold out. 110 029 is pretty much the number of consoles Nintendo shipped last week.

Last year, the Nintendo Switch Lite was released, which had a strong impact on sales: the two models sold a combined 239 740 units during Week 38 2019. It’s the first time in a long, long while that sales are down by so much Year on Year, though of course, this is special case. In October, 2020 sales should start outpacing 2019 sales, as long as Nintendo can keep up with demand.

As of this week, the Nintendo Switch has sold 3 883 543 units this year alone, and could very well hit the 4 million units milestone as early as Week 40. In comparison, sales were only at 2 322 135 units last year after the same number of week. LTD sales nowstand at 15 266 974 units, with 2 646 571 units for the Lite model, and 12 620 403 units for the OG model (by far the most popular).

Funnily enough, the Nintendo 3DS is the one console that saw the biggest increase this week, with 5 272 units sold (vs. 849 the previous week). Of course, that increase is due to Nintendo announcing that all models have now been discontinued, and not people suddenly realising that they really need to buy a Nintendo 3DS NOW. Naturally, that increase in sales is going to be pretty shortlived.

Last year, the handheld sold only 1 687 units during the same week. YTD sales now stand at 49 028 units (vs. 163 216 units last year) and LTD sales at 24 545 175 units.
