Japan – Media Create sales for Week 18, 2015 (April 27 – May 3) [Top 50]

During Week 18, a major game for the Nintendo 3DS came out in Japan: Puzzle & Dragons Super Mario Bros. Edition, which ended up selling almost 180 000 units during the first four days. This is quite the decent start, though it certainly pales compared to Puzzle & Dragons Z which sold over 500 000 units at launch (but it was right before Christmas, and many parents picked up the game for their children then).

That being said, Puzzle & Dragons Z ended up selling over 1.5 million units in total, as it just kept on selling on a long period of time. Puzzle & Dragons Z Super Mario Bros. Edition is expected to do the same, though we do not know yet if it’ll also reach 1 million units sold in total. One thing is pretty much guaranteed, though: retailers should have no problem selling all the copies shipped for day 1 (50% were sold during the first four days).

Next: Dragon Quest X: Inishie no Ryuu no Denshou Online, the third version of the game. On Wii U, it sold over 98 000 units at launch, which is definitely a great result. It managed to do better than the Wii version (around 80 000 units according to Dengeki), which is not tracked by Media Create for some reason.

With almost 180 000 units for both versions, Dragon Quest X: Inishie no Ryuu no Denshou Online has performed pretty well, and shows good player retention (which isn’t guaranteed on a dead console like the Wii, and a struggling one like the Wii U). Therefore, Square-Enix must be pretty happy about those sales, especially with the additional revenue from monthly subscriptions (and digital sales).

And then comes the last release on a Nintendo platform this week: Xenoblade Chronicles X. It ended up selling 85 586 units during the first four days (almost 70% of all copies shipped to retailers, around 130 000 units), which is definitely a great result considering the platform it came out on (which has barely any JRPG, and therefore almost no audience for this genre). However, it’s still not quite something to write home about…

Xenoblade X

It’s pretty much guaranteed that the game will reach 100 000 units sold in total (especially with the last three days of the Golden Week for Week 19), but at this rate, it might not make it to the 200 000 units threshold. After all, sales for such JRPG are rather frontloaded (meaning most of the sales happen during the first two weeks, unlike evergreen titles like Puzzle & Dragons Z), even though nothing is guaranteed just yet.

Hardware-wise, the release of Xenoblade Chronicles X (and the special Premium Set) + Dragon Quest X: Inishie no Ryuu no Denshou Online  definitely had a positive impact on Wii U sales, which reached 22 898 units during Week 18.

However, this most likely won’t last very long, and sales are expected to drop again starting next week (though the last three days of the Golden Week might help to compensate). The problem is: the line-up for the Wii U is still as empty as ever, and new releases way too sparse, which really doesn’t help with sales.

In the case of Xenoblade Chronicles X, the sales potential (for both the Wii U and the game itself) is limited by the lack of JRPG on the platforms… in fact, there isn’t any other coming until Illusory Revelations #FE this Winter! This is the kind of sticky situation which has handicapped the Wii U since its launch: even with major releases, there is simply not enough games on the platform (and not frequently enough).

As for the Nintendo 3DS, it sold 25 948 units during Week 18 (compared to 21 658 during Week 17). That increase is due to both Puzzle & Dragons Super Mario Bros. Edition and the start of the Golden Week.

That being said, the impact of the GW on sales (both Hardware and Software-wise, even though several games on Nintendo 3DS have enjoyed better sales this week) will only be really noticeable next week, with the last three days (Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday). How many 3DS will be sold during Week 19? We’ll have to wait until Wednesday, 10PM JST (3PM CET / 2PM BST / 9AM EDT / 6AM PDT) to find out!
