Daily Briefs (Aug. 17, Round 2) – Splatoon: Nintendo x ESL online tournaments
Today’s Daily Briefs… Round 2! This time, we have online tournaments for Splatoon, but also…
- 2016 Corn Maize
Splatoon
Today, the final of the ESL’s Splatoon Showdown Tournament took place at gamescom, and was livestreamed on Twitch. Before the matches begun, Satoru Shibata (CEO of Nintendo of Europe) made a special announcement for Splatoon: he announced a special collaboration with ESL (Electronic Sports League).
Starting from Early September, Nintendo and ESL are going to host a series of online tournaments for Splatoon. Those will be held during 6 months, from September 2016 to February 2017. Unfortunately, that’s all we know for now, but there’s no doubt Nintendo will provide more details in the upcoming days/weeks.
Right now, it’s not clear what those online tournaments are, if there will be a big finale sometime in 2017 (similar to the Splatoon Koshien in Japan?), etc.. All we know is that they’re only for European players (we don’t know if North America will get similar tournaments or not).
Quite interestingly, this series of online tournament will end sometime in February… just before the release month of the NX platform (March). It’s pretty tempting to believe the two are related, especially since it would not be farfetched for Nintendo to announce/release a new Splatoon game for the NX in March…

2016 Corn Maize
Every year, the Stoughton Farm (located in Newark Valley) holds a special event called Corn Maize. The corn fields are turned into a full-fledged maze, but it’s more than that… the maze is made to look like a drawing when seen from the sky. For the 2016 Corn Maize, the Stoughton Farm decided to give the event a strong Super Mario Bros. flavour, as you can see on the picture below:
