Puyo Puyo Chronicles to be announced for the 3DS, first screenshots

This year, the Puyo Puyo series is celebrating its 25th Anniversary. To celebrate, SEGA is going to release a game on Nintendo 3DS, called Puyo Puyo Chronicles, which will be released on December 8th in Japan.

Unlike most other entries in the series, this one is a RPG. You get to play as Arle (accompanied by Carbuncle), who is transported into another world. Together with Arie/Allie (a mysterious girl), they will go on a journey in order to go back to their original world.

Here’s the list of characters which are set to appear in Puyo Puyo Chronicles:

  • Arle (voiced by Mie Sonozaki)
  • Carbuncle (voiced by Tamaki Nakanishi)
  • Arie/Allie (voiced by Honoka Inoue)
  • Amitie (voiced by Shiho Kikuchi)
  • Ringo (voiced by Asami Imai)

In the RPG mode, you can battle with up to 3 players. Your goal is naturally to overwhelm your opponent, by sending garbage. To do so, you need to combine Puyo of the same colour. Of course, you can create chains to send more garbage, and deal more damage to your opponent.

Besides the main story, the RPG mode will feature over 60 quests, which is quite a lot of content. And of course, Puyo Puyo Chronicles will feature the regular Puyo Puyo modes. The developers included no less than 17 rules/modes, including Fever and Tsu.

There’s also a “Boss Battle with Everyone” mode, where up to 4 players can team up via local wireless in order to take on bosses together. During those battles, the battle system is in the RPG part. On top of that, if certain conditions are met, you can enter Fever mode and deal lots of damage to the boss.

Finally, here’s the contents of the Anniversary Pack (sold 9 490 Yen, as opposed to 5 490 for the stand-alone version):

  • Special packaging
  • 25th anniversary soundtrack CD
  • 25th anniversary vocal track CD
  • 25th Anniversary Drama CD
  • Puyo 25th Anniversary Theme

According to Famitsu, development is 77% complete, which seems to be about right for a game that will be released on December 8th in Japan!
