Clannad releasing on July 4th in Japan, getting physical release

Several months ago, Prototype announced that they were bringing Clannad, the popular Visual Novel from Key / VisualArts, to the Nintendo Switch. It was later revealed that this would be a digital-only release, most likely due to the price of Nintendo Switch cartridges and the fact that the game has already been ported to many platforms already, limiting the potential audience for the game.

But the good news is, Clannad is actually getting a physical release after all.

Earlier this week, Prototype announced that the Nintendo Switch version of the game will be released on July 4th in Japan. That’s a bit later than initially announced (it was originally slated for a Spring release), but it’s possible the delay was made to accomodate the retail release, which was not planned.

The retail release of Clannad costs 5 200 Yen + taxes, which is a bit more expensive than the download version (4 600 Yen, taxes included). It comes with a Drama CD, probably to sweeten the deal and make up for the “retail tax”.

Of course, this physical version of the game is identical to the digital version, which means it offers Japanese and English language options (though voices are only in Japanese). In other words, if you really want a physical copy of the game on Nintendo Switch, you can try importing it from Japan. If not, the digital version should get a worldwide simultaneous release on the Nintendo eShop.
