Yo-kai Watch: Nintendo picks up publishing duties for the West

Even though today’s Level-5 Vision 2015 event was primarily focused on the Japanese market, there was a couple of announcements for the west during the press conference. First of all, Hasbro talked about its upcoming Yo-kai Watch projects, and confirmed that the first toys would be launched next year in North America. Their goal is to launch the series everywhere in the world by the end of the year.

Level-5 also confirmed that they have teamed up with Nintendo for the Yo-kai Watch games in the West. Therefore, Nintendo will publish the games in Europe and North America, but no date was given for the games. However, we know that VIZ Media is planning to launch the manga in September in North America, and according to the company, it will come along with the anime series.

In its PR, Nintendo doesn’t give any new information about the games themselves (we don’t know if they’re going to start with the first game), though they do mention how important a brand it is. After all, the games have sold over 7 million units in Japan alone, and no doubt Nintendo (and Level-5) are hoping the series will be as successful in the West.

The press release also has a nice definition for Yo-kai:

*Yo-kai: They are not ghosts, monsters or creatures. Yo-kai are, quite simply, Yo-kai. They cannot be seen by the human eye, but they are everywhere. Whether born from the soul of a deceased human, or an everyday object discovering its higher purpose, their personalities are distinctly humanlike.
