TASaturday #17 – Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island (SNES)

For the TASaturday #17, we picked one of the cutest games that ever came out on the SNES… Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island! The reason this particular title was chosen is because we wanted something to celebrate the release of Yoshi’s Woolly World on Wii U in Europe, which marks the return to top form for Mario’s trusty sidekick.

And we didn’t pick up one TAS in particular… we chose to feature all three that are currently on TASVideos.orgr (the website we go to for all our Tool Assisted Speedruns needs!). This way, you can see the various goals TASers can have when doing a TAS, though with Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island, the goal is ultimately to go as fast as possible.

The first one is the most surprising of the lot, and chances are you will not understand a single thing that’s happening on screen. The TASer actually uses a very specific glitch that makes Yoshi’s tongue extend infinitely… and as you can imagine, the game really doesn’t like that one bit. The glitch causes it to jump to the SNES CPU registers, which allows the TASer to execute arbitrary code and trigger the credits sequence just a taaaaad early.

Head after the break for the other two TAS!

The second TAS is a bit more “traditional”: the game is completed as fast as possible, but no game breaking glitch is used. However, the TASer chose to have a restriction: warp zones are forbidden!

The last TAS is the more extensive of the three, as it goes through pretty much all the levels, in order to get every single collectible and complete the game with 100% completion. It’s the total opposite of the first TAS, which is why we chose to include it this week. Since it’s a really ambitious endeavour,  three TASer worked on this one.

We hope you enjoyed those TAS. See you next week!
