Japan – Media Create sales for Week 25, 2015 (June 15 – 21) [Top 50]

During week 25, only one game came out on Nintendo 3DS: Return to PoPoLoCrois: A Story of Seasons Fairytale, from Marvelous. It had a rather decent start with over 46 491 units sold, but it looks like its publisher was expecting more: “only” 40-60% of all units sent to retailers were effectively sold during the first four days, according to Famitsu.

However, this shouldn’t be a problem if the game keeps on selling on long periods of time, just like the recent titles in the Harvest Moon series. With over 46 000 units sold during the first four days, Return to PoPoLoCrois: A Story of Seasons Fairytale managed to do better than the last two entries in the PoPoLoCrois series.

As for Splatoon, it just keeps on selling: Nintendo even announced this morning that over 1 million units were sold worldwide. They also gave a specific number for Japan: 368 000. Since the company does use Media Create as source for sales numbers, that means that Splatoon has sold over roughly 58 000 units on the Nintendo eShop (and via download cards). The total for physical sales is 310 582 units.

This week, Splatoon sold over 43 653 units, which is a drop of only 18% compared to week 24. Week after week, the game’s popularity remains strong, and we haven’t even entered the Summer vacations period yet. The best thing for Nintendo is that Splatoon is helping the Wii U, which is enjoying better sales than usual.

Hardware-wise, we have a slight drop for the Nintendo 3DS, with over 24 000 units sold (2 000 less than during the same week in 2014). Nintendo’s handheld keeps on dominating hardware sales in Japan, but it’s certainly starting to show its age. That being said, sales are bound to go up next week, with the release of Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright and Conquest.

As for the Wii U, it’s enjoying better sales than usual thanks to Splatoon, with 14 616 units sold (roughly 4 000 more than during the same week in 2014). While it’s not quite possible to talk of “good” sales, it’s pretty clear the Wii U is performing better than usual thanks to Nintendo’s colourful third-person shooter, which is attracting a wide range of players.
