Shantae: Half-Genie Hero – Details about the Risky Boots campaign

Shantae: Half-Genie Hero was released in December last year, but the team at WayForward is still not done with development. After all, there is still quite a lot of DLC to take care of, including the Risky Boots campaign that funded as a stretchgoal during the Kickstarter campaign. And today, the developers finally shared more details about this new campaign, releasing this Summer.

The Risky Boots campaign will offer a brand new storyline, where you naturally get to play as the one and only Risky Boots. She’s traveling all around Sequin Island in search of components to destroy Sequin Island. This new campaign may be taking place in the same world as the main one, it’s filled with new puzzles, new enemies, and even a new End Boss. What’s more, you’re free to explore those levels in any order.

Below, you will find concept art for the Captain’s Cabin, which happens to be Risky’s base of operations (she IS a pirate after all). It’s from the very luxurious bathtub that she orders her crewmen around, telling them where to travel next.

The Risky Boots campaign offer a similar gameplay as Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse, with the “Pirate Gear”. Basically, Risky Boots can unlock new equipment as she progresses, such as:

  • the Cannon (for multi-jumps)
  • the Pirate Hat (for gliding)
  • the Graplin Hook
  • and more…

As for the new enemies mentioned above, the developers are bringing back the following two:

  • Wetman: he can block attacks and attack with terrifying switness;
  • Batgal: a returning monster from the original Shantae on GameBoy Color.

Naturally, Cristina Vee (who also voices Shantae herself) is back to voice Risky Boots.

Now, you’re probably wondering when this new Risky Boots campaign will be available. The answer is… this Summer! As always, backers will get the campaign for free. More details about it will be shared in the next update.

But wait, there’s more… The Tinkerbat Transformation Dance (an exclusive bit of DLC for backers, and more precisely those who pledged at least $55) is pretty much ready for release. As a Tinkerbat, Shantae can slash enemies with a speed scimitar, and use a Tinker-Copter to glide. This particular dance works in all main modes: Shantae Mode, Hero Mode, and Hard Core Mode.

Eligible backers will received a download code soon, once it’s passed lotcheck. The code will only work on the platform you originally selected during/after the campaign, and since it had to be purchased in advance from the platform holders, you will not be able to switch platforms.

Finally, an update on the other Kickstarter rewards for Shantae: Half-Genie Hero:

  • Blue Shantae and Classic Risky: the team is putting the finishing touches on those;
  • Drifter Blade attack: work will soon begin on that;
  • Collector’s Coin and Lenticular Poster: also underway;
  • Music CD, Shirt, Art Book: team “almost done lining up manufacturers”;
  • playable Sky, Bolo, Rottytops, and the Costume Modes: currently in development.
