Shakedown Hawaii: first “full-length” trailer, gameplay details, more

Last week, VBlank Entertainment teased the first full-length trailer for Shakedown Hawaii for this week, and that trailer is now available!

Here it is:

Brian Provinciano explains that he’s been hard at work on the game ever since it was announced, over a year and a half ago. It’s a brand new game, with lots of new tech, tools, and assets that he had to build. During that time, he kept teasing fans without various gameplay clips and teaser trailers, but today, we finally got the full trailer… and more!

Alongside the trailer, he shared plenty of details about Shakedown Hawaii: theme, story, protagonist, and business acquisition metagame!

Retro City Rampage was all about video games and pop culture, Shakedown Hawaii is a parody of mega corporation, white collar crimes, and more. It features some “comically egregious” business practices, that you previous got a sneak peek at.

Here’s what the game is all about:

You play an aging CEO, stranded in a world he no longer understands, with a company that’s now a relic of the past.

Upon discovering that online shopping’s destroyed his retail margins, ride sharing killed his taxi business, and video rental stores… are no longer actually a thing… it becomes clear that keeping the company alive will require drastic measures. He’ll need to modernize the business! Unfortunately, the modernizations he chooses are exactly those comically egregious practices!

In this game, it’s not gangs and mobsters you deal with, but boardroom executives. To modernise your company, you will have to formulate harebrained schemes, to make sure your margins and profits are boosted. But gameplay-wise, things will feel pretty familiar!

After all, the protagonist isn’t happy with just saving his company: he wants to own the entire island, and obliterate every single competitor. Online shopping, a dying fad? Taxis forever? VHS rental for the win? That’s what this protagonist is all about! And you can be sure that his methods are going to ruffle quite a lot of feathers.

Here’s how it all works: you clear story missions, do some small jobs to earn some extra cash, and then buy properties and businesses. This allows you to earn quite a lot of money, which is then funneled back into… more acquisitions. As you can imagine, new opportunity emerge as your empire branches out into new market segments. It’s a never ending cycle of acquisitions and expansions!

But the protagonist has a problem: he’s spent more time on reality TV as a CEO personality, rather than the actual CEO of his company. Also, he’s too recognisable to go on a rampage, which is why he must wear disguises (that he can get from his own costume shops, in town). Those costumes allow you to go and sabotage competitors, threaten people, and more.

Using those costumes, you can go “visit” shop and demand protection money from them: that money can then be used to fund your “legitimate” operations. Those are basically micro missions, and they can be found all over the island. Need some extra money? Then you know what to do! Those micro missions will get their own separate trailer, later down the line.
