Tsunekazu Ishihara interview (Pokémon GO, Switch)
Yesterday, Bloomberg published an interview with Tsunekazu Ishihara, which has two main topics: the Nintendo Switch (and the Pokémon game announced for it) and Pokémon GO.
About the Nintendo Switch, The Pokémon Company did not think it would be successful, and told Nintendo as much. But even as the console is flying off the shelves (almost literally…), Tsunekazu Ishihara still seem skeptical about the true potential of the platform.
About the game itself, he had some interesting (but vague) words to share:
With the Switch, we see it as a chance to create Pokémon that goes deeper and with a higher level of expression. As a result, that makes it an extremely important platform. Right now we’re using 7 to 8 inch screens, but on a high-definition TV you can express a whole different world with graphics and sound.
With this game, The Pokémon Company is thinking of ways to take advantage of the local multiplayer capabilities of the console, and they’re also considering accessories.
About the Pokémon GO, Tsunekazu Ishihara explained that they have accomplished only 10% of what they are trying to do with the game:
We’ve only accomplished 10 percent of what Pokémon and Niantic are trying to do, so going forward we will have to include fundamental Pokémon experiences such as Pokémon trading and peer-to-peer battles, and other possibilities.
They’re also thinking of ways to get the right balance for the regional Pokémon, including from a safety point of view (you couldn’t possibly ask players to wander into power plant to get electric Pokémon, for example). There’s also issues caused by having too many people gathering in a single place, or people wandering around without looking at where they’re going.
